Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, is located in the Southeast corner of Australia. It is a modern city, only 200 years old, filled with exciting energy. Innovative designs add to the intriguing mix of architecture throughout the city. Melbourne has a very diverse population. 42% of the total population (76,000) was born overseas. The top three birthplaces of residents are India, Korea, and Somalia. Throughout Melbourne at least 122 languages are spoken. Another major influence on the cultural diversity in the city is the student population. Melbourne has a very large student population, because of the more than 30 institutions located in the city.
Victoria University is one of the newest and largest universities in Australia. The university was founded in 1916 as Footscray Technical School and became Victoria University in 1990. The university has more than 45,000 students, 8,500 of them are international students and 4,600 of them are postgraduate students. Victoria University offers more than 700 courses in five different areas of study. Their course offerings range from arts and education to health and law. The university also focuses on research and research training that is important to the local, national, and international communities. |

Victoria University is dedicated to offering quality education to students from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences. They offer courses and research programs in a variety of areas.
One of their main departments is the faculty of Health, Engineering and Science. This department is a leader of knowledge and technology. They provide students with scientific training and focus on practical skills and problem-solving abilities.
The School of Architectural, Civil and Mechanical Engineering offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in many different engineering areas. These areas include architectural, building, civil, and mechanical engineering. The school is constantly changing to meet the new challenges that face Australia and the world.
Victoria University is known for its pioneering use of engineering theory in the areas of structural and environmental dynamics, packaging and distribution, computational fluid dynamics and mechanics, and hydrology and sustainable engineering. The work of both staff and students has been recognized around the world.
A detailed course equivalence hass been worked out between UNL's Architectural Engineering program and Victoria University for study at Vistoria during the sixth semester. Similar arrangements can be worked out by other UNL programs.

Living Arrangements |
| |
Students live in one of two campus residences, either Sunbury Hall or the Student Village. Sunbury Hall offers a single furnished bedroom and two kitchens in each wing. Students must make their own meals. The hall also includes five laundry rooms, five lounges, two computers, and one game room. The Student Village provides housing for over 500 students. It is broken into six individual colleges. All residences have a single furnished bedroom within a two - three bedroom unit. Each unit has either only males or only females and one bathroom. There are two kitchens within each college and students must make their own meals. The Student Village also has common rooms, a game room, a small library, study rooms, a gym, a computer lab, and available advisors. Both residence halls provide a strong community full of support and encouragement. |

The academic year begins in late February and ends in late November. The break between semesters is in July.

Type of Progam |
| |
The exchange program is based on an agreement between Victoria University and UNL that allows a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay the program costs to their home institution and then swap places with students from the host institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange.
Credits earned at Victoria University are transferable to UNL by department validation. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid that they normally receive. |

Am I eligible to apply? |
| |
The program is open to UNL sophomores, juniors and seniors who are in good standing. A 2.5 GPA is preferred. Students applying for the exchange program should demonstrate a genuine interest in an international experience and in the program.
Applications are available at International Affairs or www.unl.edu/iaffairs Application consists of Form A (bio-data), Form B (statement of purpose), two Form C's (references), Form E (proposed plan of study) and a transcript.

The deadline for application for the exchange program is March 1 and October 1. Later applications will be accepted if there are open places.

How much will it cost? |
| |
2008-2009: For Nebraska residents, a semester program is $4,836. For non-residents, a semester program costs about $10,285. The cost includes tuition, fees and insurance. Not included are airfare (about $1,400-1,600), room (from $A1945 per semester), food ($A80 per week) books and personal expenses.
