The University Community |
| |
Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is one of the oldest and finest universities in Great Britain. Campus buildings, both old and modern, are grouped around a 16th-century chapel. A broad range of subjects provides the 6,000 enrolled students with the flexibility of diverseness or specialization. The staff at Aberdeen combines teaching with research and many are involved in the forefront of international research programs in their respective fields. Exchange students are encouraged to join one or more of the many student societies flourishing on campus and participate in the cultural and sporting life of the University. All students have full access to the library and its facilities, the student health service, and the physical education center.
With a population approaching a quarter of a million, the city of Aberdeen is big enough to provide all the advantages of city life, yet compact enough that students enjoy the more intimate atmosphere of the smaller towns. In Aberdeen the traditional industries—agriculture, shipping, and fishing—have been joined by newer industries which all profit from the North Sea. Due to rich oil resources, Aberdeen has become the oil capital of Europe. It is also a city of open spaces and flowers that has miles of golden beaches, dunes, and cliffs at its doorstep. Magnificent mountain ranges are a short drive away. By train it’s two to three hours to the major cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow and seven to London. |

Students are on their own for lunch, with options on campus and in nearby cafes and off-campus pubs. The halls are various distances from campus, students usually walk or take buses to class.
