The University Community

Bath is a spectacularly beautiful city which stands on the River Avon among the hills of England’s West Country. The city’s compactness and striking architecture - Roman baths and sweeping Georgian terraces - combine to produce one of the most elegant sights in Europe. The ancient Celts, who first inhabited this area, believed that Bath’s hot springs were sacred, but it was the Romans who built the temple and the famous baths - now restored to their original grandeur.

London is only one hour and a quarter from Bath by InterCity (trains run hourly during peak periods) and Bristol is only fifteen minutes away. For those seeking quieter retreats, Bath is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with the Cotswolds to the north, the Mendips to the south-west and - just across the Severn Bridge - the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. The coast at Weston-super-Mare or South Wales is also within easy reach.

Bath is one of the smaller universities in Britain, with 7,835 students (this includes 2960 postgraduates and 700 international students). Founded in 1966, the University of Bath is unmistakably modern in both appearance and outlook. As a completely purpose-built development, the University is more compact than most, with all major facilities easily accessible from a central pedestrian parade. Shops, food courts, bars, laboratories, lecture theatres and the library are all grouped around this area and are interspersed with accommodation blocks, the whole creating a strong sense of social and academic community. The University buildings are modern, light and functional, and its 200-acre green-field site contributes greatly to a general feeling of space and calm. Having grown up in the age of technology, Bath has been well placed to respond to the changing demands placed on education by commerce. Computer facilities at the University are excellent.

The University of Bath excels at both teaching and research. It is strongly oriented towards Mathematics, the Sciences and Engineering, undertaking teaching and research which is challenging, stimulating and, above all, relevant to the outside world. Bath also has high quality programs in Modern Languages, International Studies, Social Sciences, Education and Management.

Courses of Study

Courses are open to any students who have the necessary prerequisites, and program participants are not restricted by Bath to any one department or school. Instruction includes lectures, as well as tutorials where the students meet with the instructor in groups of six to twelve students.

Living Arrangements

Students from UNL are guaranteed accommodation in a single study bedroom with shared kitchen facilities in one of the University residences. Students are responsible for accommodation costs of approx $2500 including utilities (subject to currency exchange fluctuations). Most students prepare their own food, but the University has a range of catering facilities ranging from waitress to self-service.

Duration

The exchange program is for a full academic year or the spring semester only. The academic year begins in late September and ends in late June.

Type of Program

The exchange program is based on an agreement between the member institutions for a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay the program costs to their home institution and then swap places with a student from another member institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange at each institution.

Credits earned at Bath are transferable to UNL by department validation. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid they normally receive.

Am I eligible to apply?

The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in good standing at UNL who have had at least one year of university-level study. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is preferred. UNL graduate students may apply for graduate-level programs with the approval of Graduate Studies and their graduate committees.

When should I apply?

The application deadline is March 1 for the academic year programs beginning in the fall and October 1 for the spring semester. Early application is encouraged.
