The University Community

The University of Hannover is the second largest university in the state of Lower Saxony, with more than 24,000 students. Established in 1831, the University is divided into 9 schools and offers approximately 80 fields of study.

Hannover, population 565,000, is the capital city of the state of Lower Saxony and one of Germany’s hubs of industry, transportation, and commerce. Its central location has made Hannover a major European railway terminus. The annual Hannover Trade Fair, held the last ten days of April, has grown to be the largest trade fair in the world.

Largely destroyed by World War II, the city has been rebuilt in exemplary modern fashion and has been called a masterpiece of advanced planning—combining parks and tree-lined streets with bold and imaginative solutions for the city’s traffic problems. Hannover is known for its parks and gardens, the most famous of which is the Herrenhauser Gärten (Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen), beautifully preserved in the Baroque style.

Courses of Study

The University of Hannover offers a broad spectrum of courses in the humanities and social sciences which would satisfy many general requirements for UNL students. Disciplines of study include: mathematics, natural sciences, languages and literatures, law, economics and business, social sciences, horticulture, landscape planning, and education. Complementary studies are offered in labor science, civil engineering, adult education, and caoutchouc technology. The special strengths of the University of Hannover are architecture and engineering.

As is required for all foreign students who choose to attend German universities, UNL students must take a German language exam before matriculation. The exams are given in late October and late April, just before the semesters begin.

Living Arrangements

Exchange students have the option of living in a university “student home” single room or renting a room or flat in town. The University of Hannover International Office assists in finding accommodations in student flats or dormitory. Most rooms are single rooms with shared kitchen and bath. Students may cook their own meals or eat in the mensa. Meals in the mensa cost between 2 Euros and 4 Euros.

Duration

The exchange program allows for one- or two-semester stays. The first semester, the winter semester, runs late October through the end of February and includes a two-week Christmas break. The second, or summer semester, begins in late April, ends at the close of July, and includes a brief Easter break.

Type of Program

The exchange program is based on an agreement between the University of Hannover and UNL that allows a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay program costs to their home institution and then swap places with students from the host institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange.

Credits earned at the University of Hannover are transferable to UNL by department validation. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid that they normally receive.

Am I eligible to apply?

Any UNL undergraduate, in good standing, is eligible to participate in the program at Hannover University. A minimum of four semesters of college-level German with a 3.0 GPA is preferred. UNL graduate students may apply for graduate-level programs with approval from Graduate Studies and their graduate committees.

The program requires a good degree of independence by the student. Students applying for the exchange program should demonstrate a genuine interest in an international experience and in the program.
