The University Community |
| |
Founded in 1386, Ruprecht-Karl Universität is the oldest university in Germany. The events of German history have had a profound effect on the development of this university during the 600 years since its founding. With more than 27,000 students, Heidelberg is one of the most respected universities in Germany. It is divided into 18 schools and offers approximately 80 courses of study. Humanities rank high at Ruprecht-Karl, and the Medical School is an important center of medical research. Events at the University include more than 100 international congresses and symposiums, concerts, theatrical performances, exhibitions, lectures, and sporting functions, many in cooperation with partner universities.
Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Germany, Heidelberg, population 135,000, is famous worldwide as a symbol of German romanticism. The city was built on the banks of the Neckar River. The ruins of a great castle, formerly occupied by the Electors of the Palatinate for 500 years, dominate the cityscape. |

Courses of Study |
| |
The University offers a broad spectrum of courses which would satisfy many general requirements for UNL students studying abroad: German language and literature, mathematics, earth sciences, physics, chemistry, biology, history, archaeology, oriental studies, language studies, law, philosophy and business, social sciences, and education. The special strengths of the University of Heidelberg are medicine and theology.
As is required of all foreign students who choose to attend German universities, UNL students must take a German language exam before matriculation. The test is given in late October and late April, just before the semesters begin. Exam results will require some students to take an additional, intensive German language course. |

Living Arrangements |
| |
The international office at the University of Heidelberg will help exchange students find rooms, but they cannot guarantee them because the demand for rooms exceeds accommodations. Exchange students have the option of living in a university “studenthome” single room or renting a room or flat in town. Rooms in the student homes cost approximately Euro 250 per month; each floor shares a kitchen and a bath; and students usually cook their own meals or eat in the cafeteria (Mensa). Meals in the mensa cost 2-3 Euro. Rooms in town range from 300 to 450 Euro per month.
|
| |
|
| |
Duration |
| |
The exchange program allows for one- or two-semester stays. The first semester, the winter semester, runs mid October through the end of February and includes a two-week Christmas break. The summer semester begins in mid April and ends at the close of July. |
| |
|
| |
Type of Program |
| |
The exchange program is based on an agreement between the University of Heidelberg and UNL that allows a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay program fees to their home institution and then swap places with students from the host institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange.
Credits earned at the University of Heidelberg are transferable to UNL by department validation. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid they normally receive. |
| |
|
| |
Am I eligible to apply? |
| |
Any UNL undergraduate, in good standing, is eligible to participate in the program at the University of Heidelberg. UNL graduate students may apply for graduate-level programs with approval from Graduate Studies and their graduate committees. A minimum of four semesters of college-level German with a 3.0 GPA is preferred.
The program requires a good degree of independence by the student. Students applying for the exchange program should demonstrate a genuine interest in an international experience and in the program. |
