The University Community

Leeds, located in the northern part of the United Kingdom, is the regional capital of Yorkshire and Humber. The city has a population of 750,000. Leeds has been able to maintain a strong cultural, historical, and architectural heritage while also becoming one of the fastest growing economies in the UK. Students can enjoy the many museums in Leeds such as the Royal Armouries and the Thackray National Medical Museum. Leeds has a flourishing art community with impressive shows at places such as the Opera North and the West YorkshirePlayhouse.

Leeds' historical and architectural heritage can be seen in the City Square. Recently remodeled to appear the way the Victorian's planned it, there are now fountains and the famous Black Prince Statue. Students will also enjoy visiting the Exchange Quarter and the Corn Exchange, fine examples of Victorian Architecture.

The University of Leeds started in 1904. It now has about 30,500 students from 135 countries making it the second largest university in the UK. The size and international reputation of the university allows them to offer a wide range of academic courses. There are over 700 undergraduate and 474 graduate program degrees.

The University of Leeds is exceptional at combing research, learning, and teaching. They are one of the top ten universities for research in the UK and have professors who are involved in world-class research. The University of Leeds is internationally recognized in many academic areas of study.

Courses of Study

One of the University of Leeds' most recognized academic areas is engineering, specifically architectural engineering. The department teaches students the holistic design of buildings, architecture, engineering, and building services. It gets students ready for the multi-disciplinary nature of the modern building world.

A main focus of the architectural engineering courses is the study of adaptive or responsive architectural systems. Students will begin to understand how adaptation to building systems opens new opportunities for lightweight structures in architecture and civil engineering. The topics covered include form finding processes, materials, tools, and concepts.

A detailed course equivalence has been worked out between UNL's Architectural Engineering program and Leeds University for study at Leeds during the fourth semester. Similar arrangements can be worked out by other UNL programs.

Living Arrangements

Students can choose from dormitories or flats, large or small, catered or non-catered, contemporary or traditional buildings, on campus or close to downtown. Every room has a single bed, wardrobe, desk, and a chair. Students in self-catering rooms will share kitchen facilities with other students and cook meals themselves. Those in catered rooms will have meals provided for them. Each residence will have different facillities - internet access, pool tables, common rooms, and parking spaces. All residences have a supervisor to keep an eye on the building and help with any problems.

Students are required to sign contracts for the whole academic year (September to June), unless they are attending for a short course. Meals and other services at residences are not provided during the university vacation times (December12th to January 12th and March 20th to April 20th).

Duration

The academic year begins in mid-September and ends in mid-June.

Type of Program

The exchange program is based on an agreement between Leeds University and UNL that allows a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay the program costs to their home institution and then swap places with students from the host institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange.

Credits earned at Leeds University are transferable to UNL by department validation. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid that they normally receive.
