The University Community

Queen Margaret University College is a university-level institution founded in 1875 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Located on a beautiful estate on the perimeter of the Scottish capital, Queen Margaret is host to 3,000 full-time and 2,000 part-time students. The College has an extensive library with print and non-print materials and state-of-the-art information technology (computer) facilities. An educational resource center includes a television studio, video, equipment and a darkroom for student use. It also has extensive sports and recreational facilities, complementing the numerous public facilities in the city.

Edinburgh is a wonderful place to study. It is home to a wide range of educational, cultural and leisure facilities. The Royal Museum of Scotland and their Museum of Childhood are but a few of the many museums in the city. Music forms an essential part of life in Edinburgh. Pubs often feature jazz, rock or folk music, while other venues offer concerts, recitals and musical shows. Art galleries can be found all over the city. Theaters are numerous and it is not uncommon for Queen Margaret graduates to be either on the stage or behind the scenes. Movie theaters, pubs and a variety of restaurants make Edinburgh and exciting site for your study program. Public transportation is readily available in Edinburgh and to points beyond. Glasgow is about an hour by train or bus.

Courses of Study

A full-time program generally consists of three integrated modules each semester. Each module provides an in-depth approach to the subject matter, frequently combining the application of theory to practice. Just a few of the content areas within the programs listed above include: consumer research, applied food science, nutrition, economics, textiles, mass communication, human resource management, nursing, sociology, speech pathology, linguistics and counseling.

Living Arrangements

Students from UNL live in a single room in one of the halls of residence on the campus of the College. There are two large dining halls on campus which provide meals and an all-day snack bar service. In addition, there are shared kitchen facilities in the halls of residence. It is quite common for students to combine their talents and cuisines, preparing meals together. Room and board are paid on -site.

Duration

The exchange program is for two semesters, from September to June. Semester placements may be possible for selected subject area/majors.

Type of Program

The exchange program is based on an agreement between Queen Margaret and UNL that allows a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay the program costs to their home institution and then swap places with the students from the host institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange.

If exchange spots are not open UNL students may apply on a direct-enroll basis.

Credits earned at Queen Margaret are transferable to UNL by department validation. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid that they normally receive.

Am I eligible to apply?

Any UNL undergraduate, in good standing, is eligible to participate in the program at Queen Margaret College. A 2.5 GPA is preferred. Serious students who will adapt readily to the local culture and who will benefit from living in a foreign country will be selected for the exchange.

When should I apply?

The deadline is March 1. Late applications will be accepted if there are positions open.

A complete application consists of: Form A (bio-statistics); Form B (personal essay); two of Form C (academic reference); Form E (proposed plan of study); and an official transcript. All forms may be picked up from International Affairs, or downloaded from: www.unl.edu/iaffairs
