The Program

The Utrecht Network is an exchange program for students which operates in the framework of the ERASMUS program of the European Community. The special feature of the Utrecht Network is that it covers all disciplines of the participating universities and institutions for higher education.

Utrecht exchange participants matriculate directly at the host institution and have the same privileges, services, and responsibilities as the host institution students.

Courses of Study

The Utrecht Network offers exciting possibilities for students in all fields. Students should consider the academic programs of each institution during the application process to select the site best suited to their academic needs.

At most institutions, participants study in the language of the host country. Students must have sufficient proficiency to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in class discussions and do written work. Although exchanges are not designed purely for language study, some host institutions offer intensive language pre-sessions or supplemental courses during the academic year for those who need extra training.

Students who do not have foreign language competency may study in English at several sites, many in countries where English is not the native language. Besides Ireland, students may study in English in Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, France (Strassbourg I), and Netherlands (Utrecht).

Living Arrangement

Assistance in rooming arrangements is made by the the host institution. Estimated living expenses (including food and housing) per month range from $600-$800 per month. The type of room and board varies with each institution, but it will be similar to that available to students of the host institution.

Duration

The length of the Utrecht exchange depends in part on the academic system of the host institution. In many cases academic year-only exchanges are available; in others semester placements may be made. The dates of the exchange will correspond to the academic calendar of the host institution.

Type of Program

The exchange program is based on an agreement between the Utrecht Network and member institutions for a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay the program costs to their home institution and then swap places with a student from another member institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange at each institution.

Credits earned through the Utrecht Exchange are transferable to UNL by department validation. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid that they would normally receive.

Am I eligible to apply?

The program is open to graduate and undergraduate students in good standing at UNL who have had at least one year of university-level study. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is preferred. UNL graduate students may apply for graduate-level programs with the approval of Graduate Studies and their graduate committees. Nominations for placement are made following review of applications and an interview by a UNL selection committee.

When should I apply?

The application deadline is March 1 for programs beginning in the Fall semester and Spring semester. Early application is encouraged.
