The University Community

The University of Costa Rica was founded in 1843. The Sede de Occidente campus in San Ramón became part of the system in 1968.

Costa Rica is located at the southern end of Central America. In spite of its relatively small size, Costa Rica is noted for its natural scenic beauty, the variety of its vegetation, and the richness of its flora and fauna. It has extensive coastlines (about 1,500 kilometers) on the Atlantic and the Pacific in which innumerable virgin beaches alternate with rocky bluffs.

Costa Rica is a free and independent democratic republic. The government is elected and representative. Costa Rica is one of the most stable and peaceful countries in this hemishpere. In 1949 the army was abolished and its headquarters converted to a national museum. In 1983 perpetual neutrality was proclaimed and many international human rights organizations have their headquarters there.

San Ramón is a small city of 50,000 inhabitants in the central plateau of the central mountain range of Costa Rica. It is home to three ex-presidents of Costa Rica, poets, writers, scientists and other nationally and internationally known figures. It is an hour by bus to San Jose and other important cities in the area. It is also near such tourist sites as the Arenal Volcano and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reservation.

Courses of Study

The primary focus of this program is advanced level Spanish language and culture. Students may earn 12-15 credit hours in Spanish or other areas. Courses are regular UCR courses with Costa Rican students.

     Apreciacion en Artes Plasticas
     Literatura Hispanoamericana
