The University Community

Tecnologico de Monterrey (Monterrey Tec) occupies a modern campus at the foot of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains. Since its founding in 1943, the "TEC" has been dedicated to preparing its students for careers in business, humanities, engineering, and the sciences. Over the years it has become a premier educational institution operating twenty-six campuses throughout Mexico.
Now the capital of the state of Nuevo Leon, the city of Monterrey was founded in the sixteenth century on a narrow plain between the Santa Catarina River and the mountains where it remained a small provincial outpost until the late nineteenth century. Since then, it has grown into a major business and industrial metropolis offering a wealth of resources and facilities.
Queretaro is located in the central region of Mexico about 125 miles north of Mexico City. Its strategic location near the capitals of the ancient Mexican civilizations has provided the setting for being an important industrial and business center in the country.

Mexico is the US' third most important trade partner and one of the most dynamic. Mexico is ranked eight in the world among the largest trading countries and first in Latin America. Furthermore, the United States is, by far, Mexico's most important trading partner. (U.S. Dept. of Commerce).

Courses of Study

The TEC offers a broad range of courses that will satisfy many UNL requirements. Advanced students may take regular coursework in the humanities and social sciences; business and entrepreneurship; computer and information systems; industrial, civil, and mechanical engineering; agriculture; and human resources administration. A special intensive Spanish language program is offered during the summer or the semester.

Living Arrangements

Exchange students live in dormitories on campus and have daily opportunities to socialize with the Latin American students who are enrolled full-time in the TEC. The men's and women's dormitories are separated by an olympic-size swimming pool.

As is typical in Latin American private schools, women live in a protected environment: 24-hour guard, high fence, and a 10:00 p.m. weekday curfew. Students may exercise the option of signing out for the evening until 12:30 a.m., 3:00 a.m., or 7:00 a.m., or may obtain weekend-long passes.

The campus cafeteria is open all day Monday through Saturday. There is also a variety of restaurants catering to student budgets within walking distance of the campus.

Duration

The exchange program is for one or two semesters. The first semester opens at the beginning of August and ends in early December. The second semester begins in early January and lasts until mid-May. Exchange students may also participate in the six-week intensive language program from mid-June to late July.

Type of Program

The exchange program is based on an agreement between Monterrey Tec and UNL for a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay program costs to their home institution and then swap places with students from the host institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange.

Credits earned at Monterrey Tec are transferable to UNL by department validation. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid they normally receive.

Am I eligible to apply?

Any UNL undergraduate or graduate student in good standing is eligible to participate in the exchange program at Monterrey Tec. A 2.5 GPA is preferred. At least five semesters, or the equivalent, of college-level Spanish is recommended for students who want to participate in regular coursework. Students with less language training may choose to study in the summer or semester Intensive Spanish Program before enrolling in regular classes. UNL graduate students may apply for graduate-level programs with approval from Graduate Studies and their graduate committees.

The deadline for the Fall semester or the academic year, which begins in early August, is March 1. The deadline for the Spring semester is October 1. Late applications will be accepted if positions are available.
