Think Brazil for Portuguese, for history The course of study has two parts: small daily classes in oral and written Portuguese plus classes in Brazilian history and folklore twice a week. Each class will be limited to five students, insuring almost one-on-one instruction. In addition, University of Nebraska students are welcome to attend classes in their respective majors.

Students will take field trips to the two national parks in Piauí (including several important archaeological sites), to ranches and irrigated farms, and to historic cities such as Ouiras, the 300-year-old first capital of the state. Other field trips will include visiting the port city of Parnaiba and the beaches nearby.

Think Brazil for Soccer, for Samba Sports are important in Brazil. They take their soccer as seriously as Nebraskans take their football. Intramural teams play regularly and Nebraska students are invited to participate. There are also opportunities for intramural basketball and volleyball plus physical training, too.

Brazilians pride themselves on their cordiality and hospitality. Nebraska students will have regular contact with Brazilian students studying English so they can share experiences. The saying goes that if two Brazilians are together a fiesta is a possibility, and if there are three or more it is a certainty.

About Piauí and the Federal University Piauí (say pee-Ah-Wee) is a state in the Northeast of Brazil. About 3 million people live there. The Federal University of Piauí is located in Teresina, the capital. About 7,000 students are enrolled in classes ranging from animal science, medicine, dentistry, law, education, art, and music to journalism. The university is part of the Brazilian federal university system and is connected with campuses throughout the country.

Since 1996, more than 100 students from Piauí have studied English and American culture at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Other things to think about
  • Portuguese language is a perfect match with Spanish. Together they open up possibilities for individual careers throughout the Americas from the Rio Grande in Mexico to the southern tip of Argentina. Roughly 180 million Brazilians speak Portuguese and another 150 million throughout Latin America speak Spanish.
  • Brazil’s largest trading partners are the United States and Argentina.
  • The exchange is designed for Nebraskans and is limited to 15 students.
  • Student and faculty exchanges are co-sponsored by the universities of Nebraska and Piauí and the partners of the Americas, a friendship organization which has helped provide more than 300 exchanges between the two states since 1975.

Courses of Study

The objectives of the Portuguese Language Course for Foreigners:
  • Oral and written communication in the Portuguese Language;
  • Development of reading skills in Portuguese through a variety of texts;
  • Discussion of cultural aspects of Piauí and Brazil so that students can increase their vision of the world and adapt better to the country. The Portuguese Course for Foreigners provides approximately 270 hours of class which are distributed into 230 hours for the study of Portuguese and 40 hours for the study of Brazilian culture. Students have Portuguese morning classes 5 days a week. In addition, there are out of classroom language activities. The content of the course focuses on the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and grammatical structures. Lively and interesting material (textbook, workbook, class cassettes) and extra material (video, magazines, newspapers, songs, literary texts) is used during the course.
