This study abroad program is designed for those who are interested in Chinese families and children, the educational system from preschool to university level, Chinese language and oriental arts. It is designed as a classroom learning experience followed by a 5-day travel package. Participants will include undergraduate and graduate Child, Youth and Family Studies (CYFS) students and students of Asian culture. |

Hebei University in Baoding |
| |
Classroom activities will take place at Hebei University (HEBU) in Baoding. It is situated in the northeast of Baoding, a historic and cultural city of China, with easy access to Beijing via bus and train.
Baoding is an ancient city with 2300 years of history. Its population is approximately 600,000, rich in culture, natural resources, industries, and is located in the middle of three very important cities: Beijing, Tianjin, and Shijiazhuang.
Among its Historical attractions and Scenic Spots are:
--The Western Royal Tombs of the Qing Dynasty in Yixian County
--Han Tomb at Ling Shan in Mancheng County.

Engage in Chinese ordinary people's daily life, learn Taichi and
morning exercises and ABC Chinese, calligraphy and painting, visit
a farmers market, a daycare, elementary school, high school.
Meet Chinese families and students, have dinner with Chinese
families at their home, with college students at cafeteria. Learn
about family dynamics and strengths, parenting, school systems,
traditional Chinese medicine ... and more

The Tian'anmen Square: The largest square in the world.
- The Forbidden City: The largest imperial palace in China during
the Ming and Qing dynasties with a history of around 600 years.
-The Temple of Heaven: The place where the ancient emperors
used to pray on behalf of the imperial nation. |

Full day trip to the Great Wall, Ming Tombs
Enjoy a famous Peking Duck banquet for dinner.
- The Great Wall: One of the seven wonders of the world and the
symbol of China.
- The Ming Tombs: The only underground tomb of the thirteen
tombs of the emperors in the Ming Dynasty. |

Visit the Hutongs by rickshaw, the Summer Palace
- Hutongs: The old narrow paths where common people lived. All
the Hutongs crisscross each other, dotted with the Kindergarten,
the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower, the Tea House, and the lake, House
of Gong Infante and the local people's houses among them.
- The Summer Palace: the largest and best preserved royal garden
in China with a history of over 800 years.

Enjoy the Kongfu show in the evening. |

| |
Dr. Ruth Yan Xia, is associate professor in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies. She is a specialist in the study of Chinese families and American children. Dr. Xia is a native of China and fluent in the language and culture. She has many contacts with Chinese professionals both in academic programs and travel services. She travels frequently to China for professional outreach activities.
Dr. Nancy M. Lewis is professor in the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences. She teaches and conducts research in cultural food habits and eating behaviors. Dr. Lewis has experienced other cultures through her travel and presentations at international conferences.

This course is offered for 3 credit hours of CYAF 495/895 Special Topics in Family and Diversity: Chinese Children, Youth Families or NUTR 496/896 Independent Study during the pre-session. Permission of the instructor is required for all students. |

Fees Include:
-Round trip airfare from Lincoln/Omaha
-Lodging and meals, field trips and learning materials at Hebei University during the five-day program
-5-day travel package includes hotel accommodations (3 star or better) -- double occupancy -- Beijing, Daily American breakfast, Chinese lunch and dinner -Domestic transportation - English-speaking local tour guide - Site visits and excursions as listed in the itinerary
-Chinese visa (U.S. citizens)
-Insurance
An estimated price for the course is $2,075 plus UNL tuitionTuition and fees for Art CYAF 495/895 will be billed separately by UNL student accounts and will be due approximately May 12.
Withdrawal after January 31 is subject to a $150 cancellation fee plus irrecoverable costs. Cancellations must be made in writing to International Affairs.

Reservations will be secured on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservation deadline is January 31. To insure your space in this limited-size study abroad program complete the application (form A) available on the International Affairs website. Return the application to International Affairs. Upon receiving your application we will send you further information about the trip, course requirements and other information. Applications received after the deadline will be processed only if space is available.
ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS FOR U.S. CITIZENS: A valid passport and visa are required to enter China. Citizens of other countries are advised to check with International Affairs for entry requirements to China and re-entry into the U.S.
Passport applications are available at www.travel.state.gov. It can take 8-12 weeks to obtain a passport. Do not delay application.
International Affairs will assist with the Chinese visa application process for the group.
