POLS China

This fall UNL celebrated the opening of a Confucius Institute (CI). The CI will serve many purposes including offering UNL students the opportunity to learn Chinese and to gain a better understanding of China.

Many on campus are understandably excited about these developments and eager to develop more meaningful relationships with our Chinese partners. This initiative comes from the College of Arts and Sciences and includes the involvement of Political Science, Modern Languages and International Studies.

Xi'an
Xi'an is an ideal location for students to study in China. A cosmopolitan urban center of over 6.6 million inhabitants, Xi'an is one of China's ancient capitals and as such, sits atop a treasure trove of historic sites and cultural treasures. Chief among these are the nearby Army of Terracotta warriors, a 2000 year old collection of over 10,000 life size terracotta soldiers that was unearthed by local farmers in 1974 and immediately declared to be one of the centuries greatest archaeological finds.

Xi'an is also a vibrant, growing economic center with endless construction projects and fashionable, consumer oriented shopping districts. UNL students studying in Xi'an will thus have the opportunity to explore China's ancient past while at the same time they experience its emergence as a global power in the 21st century.

Program Goals

  • help UNL students gain some or a better competency in Chinese language
  • learn about Global Challenges and responses, especially from an Asian/Chinese perspective
  • provide a forum to discuss global issues and responses with Chinese students
  • provide an opportunity to experience first-hand the dynamic pace of China's economic growth
  • allow UNL students to interact with Chinese students
  • allow UNL students to visit Beijing and Shanghai as well as other locations near Xi'an

The program will include:
4 weeks of integrated learning with Chinese students
4 weeks of intensive Chinese language, beginning or intermediate
1 week of introduction, meetings and lectures by local experts
1 week of travel to Beijing and Shanghai
