Course Description: Monteverde Institute...Education for a sustainable future
 

This advanced field studies course offers on-site instruction on planning sustainable communities with a special emphasis on the Meso-American region. Students in this class will learn basic field techniques in environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable community planning in developing regions and sensitive environments. The Advanced Field Studies course will be hosted by the Monteverde Institute in Costa Rica. The Monteverde Institute (MVI) is nestled in the Tilaran mountain range of Costa Rica in the cloud forest community of Monteverde. Established in 1986 as non profit educational association by Monteverde residents, the MVI blends international study and research with educational and cultural opportunities for local Monteverde communities.

On Expedition
 
Field expeditions will include the communities of Monteverde, Santa Elena, Ecoguapas and the capital city of San Jose; the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Children’s Eternal Forest, Caldera, Arenal Volcano, forest in Santa Rosa, Junquillal, and the Braulio Carrillo National Park.
 
 
Tentative Itinerary
 
Day 1: Welcome to Costa Rica!
Overnight in San Jose

Day 2: San Jose.
AM: University of Costa Rica, visit Ecoguapas (community), sustainable development
PM: Visit City of San Jose, Planning Department, managing growth

Day 3: Arenal
AM: Travel to Arenal
PM: Visit Arenal Volcano. Presentation “Volcanism and Alternative Energy Sources.” Tabacon hot springs.

Day 4: Monteverde
AM: Monteverde Reserve, cloud forest ecology
PM: Presentation “Forest Fragmentation and Migratory Bird Habitat: Conservation on the Pacific Slope Trail,” and “Enviromental History of Monteverde.”

Day 5: Monteverde
AM: Monteverde institute, community Art Center.
EVENING: Presentation “Local Regulatory Planning and Sustainable Futures.”

Day 6: Monteverde
AM: Women and Development, visit Finca, medicinal home garden, La Campesinita (makers of local marmalade), woodworking shop.

Day 7: San Luis
AM: Travel to San Luis. Guided hike to Amapala Hut.
PM: Presenation “Community Conservation Iniciatives.”Free time.

Day 8: Finca La Bella (Sustainable Agriculture)
AM: Lower San Luis, Finca La Bella.
EVENING: Presentation “Sustainable Agiruculture and Globalization.”

Day 9: Cloud Forest Ecology
AM: Transport to Sky Walk.
PM: Santa Elena Reserve and Bat mist netting.

Day 10: Travel to San Jose
AM: Depart to San Jose
PM: Farewell dinner.

Day 11: On to New Adventures!

 
 
Faculty Leader
 
The UNL faculty will be Professors Rodrigo Cantarero (CRPL) and Kip Hulvershorn (CRPL). Dr. Cantarero is a Research Associate at the Monteverde Institute and a developing country specialist. Dr. Hulvershorn is a long time consultant to US National Park system and an environmental planning specialist.
 
Earn UNL Credits
 
Participants will earn three credits for CRPL 495Z/895Z Advanced Field Studies Meso America during the summer pre-session.

Graduate credit is under the supervision of, and therefore granted by, the Graduate Faculty of the University of Nebraska. Graduate credit can be obtained only by previous arrangement with the Graduate College.

eNRoll during the Summer Sessions registration period in March. You can obtain the call number for this course from the academic department sponsor. Non-UNL students must be admitted to UNL. Your Program Fee Includes
 
• roundtrip airfare from Omaha
• accommodations with three meals each day

An estimated price is $2150-2200 plus UNL tuition ( $143.75 per credit, undergraduate, resident). Costs are based on 2004 rates and a minimum number of participants and are subject to change. (9/04).

 
 
Scholarships and Financial Aid
 

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recognizes the importance of increasing the diversity in all University programs. Payment Schedule
 

March 1 – $200 deposit
April 1 – $500 payment
April 30 – Balance of costs

Tuition will be billed separately by UNL student accounts and will be due approximately May 1. Withdrawal after April 1is subject to a $150 cancellation fee plus irrecoverable costs. Cancellations must be made in writing to International Affairs.
