London and Paris:
a visual arts summer study abroad

The Visual Arts in London and Paris takes students and art lovers to see, experience and learn about some of the world’s most important pieces of art and architectural sites. Participants also learn about traveling to and in foreign countries: after the trip, the participants feel equipped to go anywhere in the world. Students will be able to experience and understand what makes a masterwork, explore and experience great works of art while putting them into a historical and cultural context, and develop a clear understanding of the creative process. The history of art, from the ancient world to the present can come alive on this journey as we connect objects and images to the cultural events and movements that generated them.

London, England

We begin our journey in London with a trip to the British Museum for a look at the ancient world. We study Egyptian mummies, the Elgin Marbles and the Rosetta Stone. We visit the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square and see works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Rubens. We will tour Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral while learning about the some of the architectural masterpieces that survived the Great Fire and the Blitz. We walk across the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern and see works from Marcel Duchamp to contemporary artists like Takashi Murakami, Raqib Shaw and Jan Fabre. We see the Victoria and Albert Museum- the collection was founded on the proceeds of the first World’s Fair and boasts strange and unusual objects d’art from around the globe.

We will then leave England via the Eurostar – a train that passes underneath the English Channel.

  Paris, France

Our first day in Paris will begin with a historic city walk. In the tradition of the flaneur we will stroll the Champs Elysees from the Arc de Triomph to the Louvre, stopping along the way to learn about Invalides (the Military Museum where Napoleon is buried) the Luxor Obelisque (where the guillotine once stood) and Pont Alexander. We spend a day in the Louvre and learn about masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory of Samothrace and the Venus de Milo. We learn the mysterious stories behind Raft of the Medusa, Ship of Fools and Gabrielle d’Estree. We will take a train to the Palace of Versailles outside of Paris. We visit the Musee D’Orsay and see Impressionist and Post Impressionist masterpieces by Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. Students have the opportunity to study the stained glass windows in Sainte Chapelle, the cathedral built to house the Crown of Thorns, then climb the steps to the top of Notre Dame Cathedral and take in the city of Paris with the gargoyles and chimeras.

  Accommodations

Our centrally located hotels are close to museums and other sites we visit as well as theater, shopping and many historic points of interest such as Buckingham Palace and Luxembourg Palace. Participants gain real world experience in this class; one quickly learns to navigate these cities via public transportation. Class ends in the early afternoon and students are encouraged to explore the city and pursue individual interests. Whether those interests are history, fashion, literature or theater- London and Paris offer endless opportunities to enrich your travel experience.
