Mexico Journalism 2010

Is the use of mass media really any different outside of the U.S.? You'll find out as we explore news and advertising in Cozumel. This island in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula is considered by many to be a tropical paradise. Because it's one of the world's top cruise ship destinations, Cozumel is a laboratory of cross-cultural communication. The small town feel and island environment make this an ideal place to examine the role of mass media in a developing country. We'll meet with broadcast and print journalists, marketing specialists and local students and families. A special element of this course is the opportunity to do service learning projects in a culture where building relationships is a priority. Ten students will be selected.

Because of limited size of this program, you'll have access to unusual learning experiences unlike anything a tourist would encounter. For example, previous students have been able to have dinner with a local family, help with a turtle rescue program, observe a live television newscast, help a shelter for families in crisis, have one-on-one conversations with journalists and students, tour a reef in a submarine and learn salsa dancing. Our classroom is literally on the beach, complete with WiFi for your laptop.

Cozumel, Mexico

This island paradise is one of the top cruise ship and scuba diving destinations in the world. Cozumel is a safe and friendly environment with approximately 90,000 people in the main community of San Miguel. The island is just off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula and is 34 miles long and 11 miles wide. It has many attractions and economical prices but also has expanses of undeveloped jungle and shoreline. When asked what they'll remember most from their experience, previous students tend to agree--it's the warmth of the people we meet.

  Accommodations

The group will stay in a modest hotel just steps away from the ocean. Outside is a beautiful pool, a white sand beach and the crystal blue sea with swimming access. It's just a 10 minute walk to the main plaza and shopping zone with modern supermarket just across the street.

Faculty Leader

Phyllis Larsen, is a faculty member in the advertising sequence in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. She began traveling to Cozumel more than 25 years ago for scuba diving and now it's like her second home. The friendships she has established help students explore the culture in ways tourists never experience.
