Sweden: Hip Hop Marginality
Through Hip Hop expressions, some youths in Sweden and the US confront and overcome marginality while others cave into corporate demands. Whose stories are told through Hip Hop expressions? Do Hip Hop artists in Sweden and the US promote social awareness or social conformity? Do these artists promote social change/justice, subservience to commercial markets, neither justice nor subservience, all of the above? This course will draw upon theories in the fields of Sociology, Ethnic Studies, and Education as well as the works of hip hop artists to probe and answer these questions.

The location for this course is the beautiful city of Gothenburg, Sweden at the University of Gothenburg. Opportunities to travel within and beyond Gothenburg will be woven into this First Summer Session. Some possible places beyond Gothenburg will include Stockholm Sweden, Oslo (the capital of Norway), and Copenhagen (the capital of Denmark).
