IAS Season IV: Ancient World through Modern Eyes
Modern performing arts have returned consistently to classical antiquity and ancient mythologies to make sense of the contemporary. This season included world-class drama, ballet, modern dance, philosophy, and poetry, and considers how performance renews itself through consideration of its ancestry.
Orpheus (1950) -Film Screening

Jean Cocteau’s update of the Orpheus myth depicts a famous poet (Jean Marais), scorned by the Left Bank youth, and his love for both his wife, Eurydice (Marie Déa), and a mysterious princess (Maria Casarès). Seeking inspiration, the poet follows the princess from the world of the living to the land of the dead, through Cocteau’s famous mirrored portal. Orpheus’s peerless visual poetry and dreamlike storytelling represent the legendary Cocteau at the height of his powers.
The Joffrey Ballet: The Rite of Spring

Widely considered one of the world’s finest ballet companies, The Joffrey Ballet celebrates the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky and Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring in a triumphant performance. The Rite of Spring, which premiered in 1913, stunned audiences with its incorporation of ancient, pagan mythology, Slavic folklore, and high modernist kinetic movement. Nijinsky promised it would “open new horizons flooded with different rays of sun.” He kept his promise. The Rite of Spring remains one of the most celebrated and controversial productions of the 20th century. Co-presented with the Lied Center for Performing Arts

Lori Belilove is the founder and Artistic Director of Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company. Her direct lineage and prestigious performing career have earned her an international reputation as the premier interpreter and ambassador of the dance of Isadora Duncan. Lori received a B.F.A. in dance, religion, and classical studies from Mills College. She trained extensively in the modern technique of Doris Humphrey as a private student of both Eleanor King and Ernestine Stodelle, original members of the Humphrey-Weidman Dance Company. Lori has toured extensively both nationally and internationally including Brazil, Korea, West Africa, Canada, Mexico and Europe. She maintains a studio and school in New York City and is considered an important source for the documentation and interpretation of the Duncan technique and repertory. She is the leading dancer in the award-winning PBS documentary Isadora Duncan: Movement From the Soulnarrated by stage and screen actress Julie Harris. As a master teacher she has held residencies at such distinguished institutions as Harvard University, The Juilliard School, Northwestern University, Smith College, University of Alabama, Ohio State, Drexel, and Franklin & Marshall among others. In 2010, Lori was the recipient of the Mills College Distinguished Achievement Award and she was featured with her Company for The Career Transitions for Dancers November Jubilee Gala at Manhattan’s City Center.
Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company:Dances Inspired by Greek Antiquity

Founded in 1979, Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company is the pre-eminent Isadora Duncan dance company performing in the world today. Duncan created dances in homage to the Greek gods Apollo and Dionysius, and lesser gods, nymphs and heroes found in ancient Greek mythology. She infused her particular brand of American spirit with her love for the Greeks, convinced that the “Dance of the Future” should adhere to the ideals found in ancient Greek tragedy. Belilove and company bring fresh interpretations to Duncan’s works in a cohesive program including a lecture and screening of rare films clips.

David Herskovits is the founder and Artistic Director of Target Margin Theater. Recent Target Margin directing credits: Second Language at The Chocolate Factory; The Really Big Once at The Ontological; A Family of Perhaps Three at The Chocolate Factory; Ten Blocks on the Camino Real at The Ohio Theatre; Old Comedy at Classic Stage Company; The Argument & Dinner Party at The Kitchen; As Yet Thou Art Young and Rash at The Ohio Theatre. He also directed the company’s production of Goethe’s Faust Parts I& II, which opened to wide acclaim at Classic Stage Company in April 2006 after three years of development. Other recent productions include Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta for Theatre for A New Audience, Pascal Dusapin’s new opera Faustus the Last Night for the 2007 Spoleto Festival USA, Nick Brooke’s opera Tone Test for the 2004 Lincoln Center Festival, and The Mystery of the Charity of Joan of Arc by Charles Péguy at HERE. For 2 years he worked on People Are Wrong! a new rock-concert/anti-musical by Julia Greenberg and Robin Goldwasser, with performances at PS122, Mass MoCA, and the 2004 Bonn Biennale; the Target Margin Theater/Vineyard Theatre production of People Are Wrong! premiered in October 2004. With Target Margin other notable productions include a new opera based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story “The Sandman,” which he developed with composer Thomas Cabaniss and Dramaturg Douglas Langworthy, The Marriage of Figaro, Dido, Queen of Carthage by Christopher Marlowe, and the premieres of Rinne Groff’s The Five Hysterical Girls Theorum and Tulpa by Todd Alcott. His 1998 production of Mamba’s Daughters by Dorothy and DuBose Heyward won an OBIE for the company, and was presented at the 1999 Spoleto Festival USA. David directed Chikamatsu’s Love Suicides at Amijima at the Institut Internationale de la Marionnette in Charleville-Mezieres, France, and The Hairy Ape at The Cleveland Public Theater. Other productions include classics from Shakespeare to Ibsen, opera and music-theater, modern writers such as Gertrude Stein and Marguerite Duras, and neglected works with literary and historic significance. He has published essays in The New York Times, Theatre Magazine, and Performing Arts Journal, among others. David was a member of the 2006 OBIE awards committee and has served on the New York State Council on the Arts Theatre Panel and the South Carolina Arts Commission, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and various other grant-giving institutions.

The Argument and Dinner Party

Experience two theatrical works in one evening, directed by award-winning David Herskovits, founder of acclaimed Target Margin Theatre. Based on both Aristotle’s Poetics and the essays of Gerald F. Else, The Argument is a passionate student’s love-letter and farewell to his teacher — reminding us of the personal pathos that binds us to the Greeks, and firing us to capture that chimera, art. A detailed yet playful adaptation of Plato’s Symposium, Dinner Party takes on love from every angle, delving into the original text with gusto to bring out the philosophy and lust, language and appetite — not to mention really good wine.

Caridad Svich is a US Latina playwright, translator, editor, songwriter, and educator. She was awarded the 2012 OBIE for Lifetime Achievement, 2012 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award for her play GUAPA, the 2011 American Theatre Critics Association Primus Prize for THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS, based on the novel by Isabel Allende. Her work is published by TCG, Broadway Play Publishing, Eyecorner Press, Smith and Kraus, Manchester University Press and more. She is alumna of New Dramatists, founder of NoPassport theatre alliance and press, associate editor of Contemporary Theatre Review, Drama Editor of ASYMPTOTE, and contributing editor of TheatreForum.
