Bio
Nancy Mitchell is professor of advertising and chair of Graduate Committee in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, where she's taught since 1990. She served as chair of the advertising department for 11 years before heading the graduate program in her college. Prior to her tenure at the University of Nebraska, she taught at West Texas A&M University. She's taught a variety of courses, including advertising principles, design, copywriting, research and strategy, and campaigns, introduction to mass media, and media ethics. She worked as an advertising and media professional for 15 years before entering academe. She gained experience as a copywriter, designer, editor, fundraiser and magazine editor in an array of businesses including a large department store, a publishing company, an advertising agency, a newspaper and a Public Broadcasting System affiliate.

She is a co-author with Sandra Moriarty on a leading textbook for advertising introductory courses, Advertising Principles and Practice, 8th Edition, scheduled for publication by Prentice Hall early in 2008. Other research activities focus on creating effective messages to underrepresented groups, ethical issues and assessment of student learning. She has delivered numerous speeches on images of underrepresented groups in advertising. One recent publication is a chapter on Women and Advertising for Women in Mass Communication, 3rd edition. She's also worked on the assessment of advertising and journalism education.

Her involvement on campus includes participation on the Chancellor's Speakers Bureau, chairing the Chancellor's Commission on the Status of Women, chairing the Academic Planning Committee and committees revising the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's general education requirements. Nationally, she served as Advertising Division Head for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. She serves on the editorial boards for Journal of Advertising Education and Journalism and Mass Communication Educator.

She earned her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, master's at West Texas A&M, and Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska.

Family activities, golfing, reading, cooking and walking her Jack Russell Terrier, Taz, consume her precious free time.
