POWER Baseball Organization Seeking Media and Marketing Interns
Palm Springs POWER Baseball in Palm Springs, California is looking to fill its media relations and marketing internship positions for the 2010 season. The POWER is a collegiate summer league baseball team playing games from the end of May through July, while the new California Winter League will run games throughout the month of February.
-- MEDIA RELATIONS: We have two internships available for media relations; one will run during the California Winter League season from January through the end of April, and the other will run during the POWER season from May through the end of July. This is a paid internship and the Palm Springs POWER organization will also provide housing for the intern if necessary. However, if an intern has family in the desert, he or she may stay there. Requirements include some experience writing press releases, as this is a big part of the position.
The Media Relations Intern is responsible for: writing press releases, creating and organizing the team roster, updating the website, contacting local media with post game reports, writing post game articles immediately following the game, operating GameTracker webcasts during games, and keeping track of and updating team statistics. This is generally done under the supervision of the General Manager. In addition, the intern must be willing to travel with the team for the few road games they have. The media intern may also assist the marketing team during the pre-season by attending special events to help promote the team and assist with other marketing duties.
The internship will give a student who is seriously interested in working in media, and more specifically in sports, an opportunity to work directly with a sports team and with local media. In addition, the intern will play a vital role in game day operations.
-- MARKETING: We are also filling positions for our marketing internship position. We will take three interns for the summer position and up to five for our winter season. Time frames are the same. The marketing interns will work directly with Jordin Hatcher, Director of Marketing & Promotions, throughout their time here. Marketing Interns are responsible for promotional events both during the games and at community appearances. They are also responsible for creating fliers for events, contacting outside organizations, and organizing the events. They will work closely with the community to help brand our organization and get our name out to those who haven’t been to games before. They will create contacts within a prosperous community, and with businesses throughout the desert. This includes media contacts as well, with possible radio air-time or even television interviews. Interns will also be asked to add additional input to the expansion of our organization. We ask our interns, what ideas do you have that can help us? Run ideas by us, get the go-ahead to implement them and see where it takes them. The goal of the marketing intern is to create a positive, fun experience for the fans during games and to draw crowds to games through community events.
This experience really is invaluable, especially if somebody has the desire to work within the sports field.
