Interested in Political Communications? Apply for paid D.C. Internships!
CoJMC Advertising Alums play significant roles in the offices of many senators and congressmen.
Marc Shultz, 2006 Ad grad working for Senator Ben Nelson, invites current students to explore life working on Capitol Hill and living in Washington, D.C. with paid communications internships in the senator's office.
Grab this unique opportunity to be at the center of our nation's government. These internships can provide many different avenues of exposure for the future communications professional. Senate offices utilize press staff to effectively communicate various issues relating to legislative policy - a crucial aspect of modern democracy - and thus have a continual demand for qualified individuals to be available.
The best way to quickly enter into the world of national political communication is to work as a press intern in a Senate or other Congressional office. This gives one ample time to adjust to the Hill and media exposure that exists in Congress.
While almost every Senate office provides this type of opportunity, Sen. Ben Nelson PAYS full time interns a stipend for their work. We generally select one press intern per semester (spring, summer and fall) but note that general Congressional internships are also valuable for determining future goals for a career. We make our selections quickly to allow a few months before starting for students to plan for moving to Washington.
The internship application is the start of the process and can be found at this address: http://bennelson.senate.gov/services/internships/
Many UNL Alumnae work or have worked here on the Hill, including Aaron Eske, Omaid Zabih, Kate Howard and Marc Schultz. We would like to see our UNL presence grow out here, as we think this is a great opportunity for college students!
If anyone has questions about how to make this happen (i.e. moving, logistics, what to expect) please contact Marc at his personal number (402) 960 0706 (please leave a message), or email: mwshultz@gmail.com or at Marc's facebook page.
