KSDK, Channel Five in St. Louis, is seeking interns for the summer and fall semesters of 2008
Our program is unique from those at other stations. All interns contribute significantly to the product and get a hands-on experience that prepares them for the job market. Since the program was established in 1985, we have coached more than 800 interns, many who are happily employed in the business.
Each intern is assigned to tasks in a variety of areas, based on their individual interests. The areas include: the assignment desk - the heart of the news operation - the special projects area of the newsroom, the "Show me St. Louis" team, the sports office, the community relations office, and the Web team.
Most importantly, students are given ample time to accompany reporters on stories and create samples of their work.
We highly encourage each intern to make a total commitment to the experience and stay through the conclusion of the summer semester program. Hours vary, according to a student's obligations, but we believe that more exposure leads to a better learning experience. Out maximum requirement is 30 hours a week, including a daily, one-hour break.
If this sounds like something you would like a student to consider, please have a student submit these documents to me:
1. A letter explaining why the student would like to be a KSDK intern.
2. An official college transcript sent directly to me.
3. A resume.
4. Three broadcast writing samples. If those are unavailable, I will take work from a journalism class or a class research paper.
5. A letter of recommendation from a broadcast professional. It's important that journalists are resourceful, so I'm aware this is difficult. However, I will accept a faculty member's recommendation if the student can not find a broadcast professional.
An intern must receive academic credit and furnish a letter from a faculty advisor explaining how credit will be arranged after the student is accepted. Students should have completed at least one year of college.
Please ask any interested students to complete the material and call me to set up an appointment. The deadline for submitting materials is Tuesday, April 1. I encourage each student to attend one of the group interviews. They will be held on March 7, March 13, March 28, and April 4. Each one is at 3 p.m. at KSDK, 1000 Market Street (in St. Louis).
Although the internship is unpaid, we offer students a chance to work in one of the most exciting network affiliates in the country. Our corporation leads the nation in newsgathering and in it commitment to it employees and community.
I encourage you to visit out Web site ksdk.com for additional information. I would also be pleased to speak to classes at your university about our program. Some of my best recruiting efforts come from meeting students in the classroom.
I hope you will send us your best and brightest. Please feel free to call me directly (314)-444-5120 with any questions. I can also be reached by e-mail at aehrlich@ksdk.gannett.com. Thank you for considering KSDK, NewsChannel Five. We look forward to meeting your students.
