Are you a new reporter?

July 15, 2007
Riana Perez, 7News, Denver, CO.

I have only four more times of interning so I'm in a time crunch to get some packages written and edited for my resume tape! Ahh! I'm kind of sad that this will be over, because I feel like I'm just starting to really get to know the reporters.

I covered a story about a pit bull that had surgery and was recovering and I'm so not the animal person. You should have seen me. I got to ask all of the questions because I just went out with a photographer. It was pretty neat.

Then we went to this warehouse that was on fire. I literally smelt like I had been at the campfire all day. It was intense! While I was there one of the photographers from one of the other stations asked me if I was a new reporter that just got hired on. I smiled and said, "I wish, no I'm an intern." It was pretty funny. Overall, things are going well. Here is a quick list of some lessons that I have learned.

Lessons learned:

  • Buy cheap shoes
  • Bring a change of clothes in the car
  • Always be ready to do a stand up
  • Ask questions....but not too man
  • Try to always come to the morning meeting with story ideas
  • Watch the news on your days off
  • Make friends with everyone, especially the fellow interns...you never know who you will work with.

My job at Cerebral Palsy is going well. I have a handicap girl that comes and works with me and she is so cute. I love working with her.

The organization was founded by seven mothers, so I get to invite those seven mothers to sort through pictures with me next week. I'm so excited because these women are so wonderful. The challenges they went through are amazing!! I called each one of them and one of them and I already get along really well. Her name is Phyllis and she told me that her birthday is Thursday and she writes poetry. Best friends right there. We are going to exchange some of our work. So that job has been going really well. A part of me kind of wants to ditch the reporting thing and do this instead.

Until next time....
