Experience Complete at NTV

August 27, 2007
Spencer Schubert, NTV , Kearney, Nebraska

To sum up this summer in just one blog is nearly impossible to do for me. It has been a summer full of laughs, big stories, experience and camaraderie. I have been able to go from intern Spencer Schubert to NTV Sports Anchor Spencer Schubert in a matter of three months.

I don't know how many stations in the state of Nebraska can really give a college student as much exposure to the business as I was able to receive this summer. If you have read any of my previous blogs, you would know that I was able to gain early experience with the station as I shadowed the sports reporters and learned to do what they do.

Within weeks, I was tossed into the mix right along with them. I would cover one high school baseball game and they would cover the other. We would both have the same amount of responsibility put onto our shoulders. I was able to finally become one of them and not just an intern.

I did package after package, VO's, VOB's, VOBB's, Nat Packages and much more! I was still an intern, but by the middle of June I was getting stories that the sports director did on most days. I traveled to Lincoln to cover Husker football and volleyball.

I left all of you off basically right there, and I am here to tell you the last half of my summer was double what my first half was. The station had me start doing live stand-ups along with putting me in the newsroom to go live, and even once at the desk. I was a part of the actual news team that I had looked up to and still do to this day.

There were days where the station asked me to go live from the newsroom and the news anchor would toss it back to me and I would report on a story. As the summer wore on, I began doing more packages and really started noticing the improvement from just the beginning of the summer.

The highlight of my summer came in the last two weeks of my internship at the station. I got to be an actual sports anchor for a show. I was by then used to wearing suits, dress shirts and ties to work, which was the exact opposite of when I started the summer.

I stood at the wall, had my scripts in my hands, and the bright lights were on me.

It was my show time.

It all went off without a hitch and I felt that I did great. I was able to get a practice sportscast in days earlier leading up to it, and you wouldn't believe how much that really paid off.

I am now back in Lincoln, going to school like all the rest of the students, but I will never forget the experiences I had last summer at NTV. I now have a resume tape, and at the age of 20, I still feel that is a rare thing to be able to say!

Thank all of you who have read my blog up to this point, and I hope many of you that are aspiring to look for very beneficial internships to give NTV a good look.

I couldn't ask for anything more out of an internship in Nebraska. Thanks again for reading and contact me any time if you have any other questions. My email is stsball23@hotmail.com.

Thanks!

My name is Spencer Schubert, and I am going to be a junior double-major in Broadcasting and News-Editorial. During the school year, I have written for the DN, co-hosted a show on ESPN Radio for two-thirds of the year, and also worked for a TV Station based out of Kearney. I love sports and everything about it, and that is what my internship will be this year. I will be interning as a sports reporter for NTV out of Kearney. Hope to hear from you all this summer!
