At Kappa, we place the highest regard for philanthropy and contributing to the livelihood of our community. We instill this value in our members by sponsoring and supporting events on the UNL campus, and by simply volunteering our time.
Our Events:
Kappa Karnival is Sigma Chapter's fall philanthropic fundraiser. Held from 10 pm to 2 am, the Karnival allowed UNL students a time for fun with their friends. We provided unlimited funnel cakes, pop, and music. The main attraction was the dunk tank. For only a quarter per ball, guests were able to throw a softball at the bull’s eye target attempting to dunk their favorite Kappa into the tank. Splashes were being made constantly until 2 am and the members enjoyed the time to not only raise money for a local charity, but to share memories with fellow sisters and friends outside the house.
The proceeds from Kappa Karnival were donated to:
Kappa Kabana has become the Sigma Chapter's annual spring philanthropy. The luau theme creates a fantastic setting for this campus cookout. Held at the house, students can enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs grilled by members’ parents. To kick off the fabulous spring weather, a variety of bands perform throughout the event. The bands contribute to the cause by performing for free and helping to entice students passing by with their music. Each year, Kappa Kabana continues to increase the amount raised at the event.
The proceeds from Kappa Kabana were donated to:
Our National Philanthropy- Reading is Fundamental
In November of 1966, Margaret McNamara gathered a group of volunteers and launched the program Reading is Fundamental. Starting in Washington, D.C., and now reaching over 4.5 million children, Reading is Fundamental (RIF) has become an international organization supported by the U.S. Department of Education and private funds. RIF is a book distribution and reading motivational organization that not only teaches children to read, but encourages them to continue the development of literacy skills throughout their lives.
In 2004, Kappa Kappa Gamma adopted RIF as its national philanthropy at the national convention. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Kappa Kappa Gamma Chapter helps support the national philanthropy through different activities each year. Through book drives, tutoring throughout the Lincoln community, and financial donations, Sigma Chapter continues its support of RIF and the lives that it influences on a daily basis.
