ORIENTATION
Dates and location
Orientation takes place during the first week of each semester in the Language Laboratory, which is located in Burnett 302.
Orientation and placement testing (first week of the semester)
Anyone in higher courses who is not familiar with our lab is welcome to attend any of the orientations. It is also possible to do a Lab Tour online.
Please refer to the Language Lab Calendar by clicking on "Calendar" in the navigation column on the left. Once there, click on your section of your course to see the location.
The French 101 orientations are in Burnett 302. The Spanish 101 orientations are either in Burnett 302 or 305.
Notes to teachers
Please announce to your students on the previous day to come directly to the Lab on the orientation day. Be sure to leave a note in your classroom for any students who are joining your class late.
Orientation for students in 102 or higher:
Students in other courses who are new to our Lab may come to any of the orientations listed as 102 or higher.
Anyone who has missed orientation or is in 102 or higher may click on Lab Tour for information about the Lab.
Information that your students must know:
- Lab Location: Burnett 302, Drop off and pick up of cassettes: Burnett 304 if applicable.
- Beginning of regular operation: Tuesday, January 22.
- Hours of the Language Lab.
- Course and Section number of your class, e.g., French 101, section 002.
- For courses that use audio cassettes, students must buy at least one blank audio cassette.
- Acceptable brands and appropriate length of audio cassettes: Please see cassettes page.
- Labeling of cassettes: Please see cassettes page.
- Lab attendance record: To have their attendance recorded, students must present a valid UNL ID card that is in working order, i.e. it is not bent or broken, and the magnetic stripe is not scratched. Students must check in and within a maximum of 50 minutes check out. See policy statement.
- Students may turn in cassettes for taping starting the first day of the semester in Burnett 304. The tapes will be recorded in the course of the first week and will be ready by Tuesday of the second week. Starting in the second week, turn-around time will be approximately 24 hours.
As the instructor, you will receive a weekly e-mail of your students' lab attendance. The e-mail will tell when and for how long students were in the lab. It does not indicate whether or with what material they worked.
Placement testing in French, German, and Spanish: The placement tests are intended to help us advise students with previous knowledge acquired elsewhere in the particular language.

The Language Lab also has video and computer capabilities. Thirty-two student positions can receive video programming from the console. Thirty positions have 17" flat-panel iMacs;, and two have eMacs, all have audio in and out through the tape decks. In addition, there are eight iMacs that are independent of the tape decks. All computers are connected to a Mac G5 file server and also to the Internet.
