Scholars Community
A scholar community is similar to a first-year learning community in that members of both types of communities live together, take a few courses together, and enjoy exclusive programming opportunities. However, membership in a scholar community is by invitation only. All scholar communities share the goals of academic excellence, leadership development, and a focus on citizenship.
Scholar Communities are by Invitation. What does this mean?
Depending on the community, members are invited based on a combination of academic achievement, demonstrated desire to participate in the community's goals, and/or enrollment in a particular college. Each community’s page provides more information regarding membership.
If I have been invited to join a Scholar Community but am also interested in a Learning Community, how do I choose between them?
Your decision between a Scholar Community and a Learning Community may depend on courses offered, community goals, the focus of the community, and your career plans. If you want more information about either option, feel free to contact us with questions.
Can I live with a friend who is not in a Scholar Community?
We will do our best to accommodate you and your friend, but we have limited space for our scholar communities. If we can't put the two of you together, we will contact you to see what you would like to do.
I have already taken one of the courses the Scholar Community takes together; can I still be in it?
Yes! At New Student Enrollment, students will work with an academic adviser to verify the scholar community courses are right for you. If there is a course for which you already have credit, you will not be expected to retake that course.
What should I do if I have been invited to join a Scholar Community, but my first choice residence hall is not home to the Scholar Community?
We strongly encourage you to select the residence hall that is home to your Scholar Community as your first choice on your Housing Contract. If you have concerns about this, please contact us for more information about the requirements of individual Scholar Communities.
