The Lentz Center for Asian Culture usually features four temporary exhibitions per year.
The Arts of Buddhism
August 14, 2009 - December 18, 2009
Come and explore the arts of Buddhism!
The Lentz Center for Asian Culture is pleased to announce its autumn exhibition, "The Arts of Buddhism". The exhibition will include a wide range of Buddhist materials from Japan, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. It will showcase the Lentz Center's large collection of sculpture, textiles, paintings, and ritual objects. There will also be examples from private collections.
The purpose of the exhibition is to show the different kinds of Buddhism, the varied images of the Buddha and other important Buddhist figures. There will be a handout to give general information and explain terms. Illustrative photographs will also be included.
Buddhism is the primary religious expression of most of East Asia, of Northeast and of Southeast Asia. It has spawned a wealth of images and sacred spaces for the faithful to visit and worship. The Lentz Center exhibition will offer an opportunity to see some of this rich body of art. The opening reception will be held on September 4, 2009, 5:00pm-7:30pm.
The Mystical Arts of Tibet
October 21-24, 2009
Come and explore arts of Tibet!
Once again, please welcome the Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery who will be constructing a Mandala Sand Painting at Lentz Center for Asian Culture. Of all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, painting with colored sand is one of the most unique and exquisite. Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days or weeks to form the image of a mandala. To date the monks have created mandala sand paintings in more than 100 museums, art centers, colleges and universities in the United States and Europe.
The Lentz Center is located in the lower level of the Hewit Place building, 1155 Q St., across from the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30-4 p.m. Sundays. It is closed Mondays. There is no admission charge.
