Library Use Instruction

At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the University Libraries serves the information literacy needs of its students, staff and faculty, as well as the community at large, by providing a variety of instructional services. Such instruction is based upon the belief that information seeking is an essential skill for life-long learning which can be learned and improved throughout a person's educational and professional career.

Subject-specific Instruction

The UNL Libraries assigns public services librarians to specific departments to provide specialized instruction in the use of resources tailored to particular disciplines. Liaison librarians are available to provide instruction either in the libraries or in classrooms, addressing numerous skills from identifying useful resources to searching electronic databases. For more information about these services, contact the appropriate liaison librarian.

General Instruction: Learning the Basics

The Libraries provides a number of general (i.e., not subject-specific) instructional services for those needing a basic orientation to the services and collections of the University Libraries, including general orientation tours, international student orientation tours, and a formal one credit course in library instruction for freshmen and transfer students.

General Orientation (generic) Tour Programs

General orientation tours of any of the UNL Libraries branches are given on request. Tours are open to the general public, free of charge. Generic tours are brief (25-30 minutes) with stops made at major service points. For scheduling information, call Tracy Bicknell Holmes at (402) 472-2512 or e-mail tbicknell-holmes1@unl.edu.

Library 110: Introduction to Library Research

Library 110: Introduction to Library Research (LI110) is a one-credit hour class designed to teach basic information literacy skills to first year and transfer students. The course introduces concepts and techniques used for searching databases and using search engines while familiarizing students with UNL's library services and resources. Students will develop skills that improve their efficiency in searching, diagnosing research problems and understanding search results. Library 110 is a graduation requirement for students in many colleges. For more information about the course, call the Instruction Office at (402) 472-0703.
