Tips for Searching Multimedia Resources

Catalog

  • For finding books that have images in them (illustrations, book plates or portraits), do a keyword search for your topic, then type "AND", and include: "ill.", "illus.", "plates" or "port.". You may have to adjust the search until you find what you are looking for. For example: birds AND (ill. OR illus.). Then you can use the scanner to digitize the image.
  • For architecture slides search by keyword of topic AND "slides".
  • When searching for different media formats such as sound recordings and videos, click on "Advanced Keyword" then there will be a pull down list to choose material type.

Databases

  • Find a database by the subject you are interested in. You can then search for your topic "AND" "image", "cartoon", "table", "chart" or "illustration". Every interface has different ways of doing things. Often the help buttons are very useful if you are stuck.

Search Engines

  • Currently, Google and AltaVista are our favorites. Both have tabs that make it easy to customize your search for websites which contain images, audio and video.
