What We Do

Each year the Friends of the Libraries, UNL, makes a donation to the University Libraries that directly benefits UNL students and faculty. The Friends also sponsor programs, exhibitions, and other spectial events.

In addition, the Friends take on special fund-raising projects such as:

  • Student Reading Room Campaign (2000-2002), which successfully raised $75,000 to furnish a reading room in Love Library
  • Saving Our Treasures Campaign (2004-2005), exceeded its goal by raising close to $40,000 to preserve selected materials from the University Archives and Special Collections

The Current Special Campaign

As part of the 20th Anniversary celebration for the Friends of the Libraries of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, we are embarking on a new campaign for 2007. The goal is to raise $35,000 to upgrade student study furniture in several libraries, mainly C.Y. Thompson Library on East Campus, the Geology Library in Bessy Hall, and Love Library on City Campus.

new furniture in love library

More than 60,000 visitors came into the Libraries last year. Use of our study spaces goes up each year from 2-4%. Today's undergraduates like an environment that is flexible, wireless (or providing computer ports), individual or group study spaces, and quiet or semi-quiet areas. We are hoping to upgrade the old furniture to something more comfortable and flexible, truly making the Libraries the academic living room of the campus.

Saving Our Treasures Campaign

Materials housed in the Archives and Special Collections of the University Libraries are used by a variety of students and scholars for the purpose of teaching and research.

The Friends of the Libraries raised more than $25,000 to help preserve these rare and sometimes one-of-a-kind items. Items in need of preservation include: hand drawn maps by Mari Sandoz, A Journal of the Voyages and Travels of a Corps of Discovery by Patrick Gass, Bellum Jugurthinum a 15th century illuminated manuscript, the first bought by the University, and assorted photographs from the University Archives.
