BASIC GUIDE
  • Use an Index to periodicals to find articles on a specific topic.
  • These Indexes tell which issue of a journal has a specific article on a desired subject.
  • The following are some of the significant indexes available through the UNL Libraries E-Resources page
  • These indexes can be accessed from on or off campus. Instructions for off campus access can be found here.
  • The article indexes will give you a reference, usually to a conference publication or to a journal issue that contains an article on the specific topic.
  • Search the online catalog to see if any of the UNL Libraries has the conference publication (select "keyword") or a subscription to the journal (select "journal title").
  • Use the Interlibrary Loan service to request the article if it is not available through the UNL Libraries.
  • Some journals are available electronically through the UNL Libraries. Information for electronic journals is available at the end of this guide.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ARTICLE INDEXES
GENERAL ENGINEERING INDEXES
  • Compendex Web/Ei Compendex Plus
    • Index/citations, some abstracts (1970- )
    • Indexes U.S. and international literature in engineering and technology including major engineering journal articles, conference papers and reports but excluding patents and standards.
    • Subjects covered include: chemical and process engineering, computers and data processing, applied physics, electronics and communication, civil engineering and mechanical engineering. Commands the entire spectrum of engineering, in depth, with abstracts from over 2,600 international journals, conference papers and technical reports.
    • Updated weekly.

SPECIALIZED ENGINEERING INDEXES
  • INSPEC
    • Contains more than 4.7 million citations.
    • Abstracts to worldwide literature of physics, electronics and electrical engineering, computing and control, and information technology.
    • Primary coverage journal articles, conference proceedings, books, technical reports and dissertations.
    • Corresponds to: Physics Abstracts; Electronics, Electrical & Electronics Abstracts; and Computer & Control Abstracts.
  • METADEX
    • Materials science database.
    • Coverage: raw materials, refining, processing, welding, fabrication, end use, corrosion, performance, recycling and more.
    • Materials covered: all metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.
  • SCIFINDER SCHOLAR
    • Integrated, user-friendly, point-and-clic access to several Chemical Abstracts Service databases.
    • Any information needs regarding chemicals, materials, compositions of products, etc.
  • TRANSPORT
    • Find information about any aspect of any area of transportation, such as, vehicles, airplanes, railroads, highways, etc.
    • Includes transportation research and transportation economics publications.
  • WATER RESOURCES ABSTRACTS
    • Records in the database cover the development, management and research of water resources.
    • Includes abstracts of current and earlier journal articles, monographs, reports, and other publication formats.

ELECTRONIC JOURNALS -

Full text (complete articles) of many journals are available online to patrons of University of Nebraska Libraries. Time period of electronic coverage varies. A list if these journals can be found on the E-Resources page.
