How to Access Resources from Off Campus

How to Remove Proxy Server Configuration

The University Libraries subscribes to a number of resources that by contract (license) are restricted to use by faculty, staff and students currently registered or employed at UNL. As a consequence, if you are working off-campus, you will have to verify your affiliation with UNL and access these resources by proxy.

Beginning August 2, 2004 a new proxy server was implemented that no longer requires authorized users to configure their Internet browser.

If you previously configured your browser you will need to remove this information. Directions on how to remove the proxy server configuration may be found below for most browsers.

Once you have removed proxy server configuration, when you go to a restricted database you will be prompted for your login and password. The login is your last name and the password is the NU ID Number found on your NCard.

A Note About "cookies"

Many of the indexes pass "cookies" to your browser. Cookies are strings of text information that are used by some web sites to keep track of your searches, format results, and for other purposes. If you set your browser to refuse all cookies or use software that "strips" or otherwise restricts cookies, you will not be able to use the new proxy. Enabling cookies while using the indexes is required.

The default setting for most browsers is to accept all cookies. If you are not sure what your settings are or how to change your settings, consult your browser's help file. Internet Exporer 6 users - check the settings under Internet Options and the Privacy tab, this needs to be set to low for many of the Libraries' databases.

A Note About Java & Java Script

Many of the indexes use Java and Java Script in their applications. To use JAVA you must have a java capable operating system like Windows95 or Windows98. Windows 3.X versions do not support Java. Java Script runs on all Windows platforms including Windows 3.x if you have enabled Java Script through your browser.

Tips on Configuring a Firewall with the Libraries Databases

Individuals who use a firewall to protect their home computer may want to configure their firewall so they can access specific databases in the Libraries. Since firewalls differ in this configuration these directions are general. The UNL Libraries uses a variety of computers for our databases. Some are on campus and others are maintained by vendors all around the country. This means that the IP numbers and port assignments vary with the database. The following information should help you get started. For more information mailto:iit@unlnotes.unl.edu please include which database you want to connect to.

The Libraries use several computers for the ICA Client databases. Here are databases that use the ICA Client:

  • Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy
  • Scifinder
  • World Development Indicators
  • American Film Institute Catalog
  • AMS Comference and Symposium Preprints
  • English Short Title Catalogue

These are the IP numbers that are used for the databases:

  • 129.93.17.161
  • 129.93.16.66
  • 129.93.16.145/
  • The ICA WINFRAME uses dynamic port allocation which means that there isn't any single port number assigned. The initial synchronization between the WinFrame client and the WINFRAME server occurs over port 1494, but the actual WINFRAME session occurs over a dynamically allocated port. For this reason, it is might be necessary to allow connections over a range of TCP/IP ports through the given firewall. The client contacts the server over tcp port 1494. The server sends a message back to the client over tcp port 1494 saying "connect using port X" where X is any port number above 1023. This is called using TCP High Ports. All of the ports under 1023 are reserved for system use and "Well Known" protocols such as FTP, HTTP etc. The WinFrame server will dynamically allocate a specific port above 1023 for each TCP/IP session. This is how we can support multiple sessions at one time. Each one has it's own port. How do you configure this - either allow connections through all ports or allow communications over TCP High Ports. Some firewalls allow you to do this by setting an option in the rules.
