Foundation Center

Established in 1956, the Foundation Center is a national nonprofit organization that helps grant seekers research foundations and develop grant proposals. It focuses on nongovernmental grant makers. The Center publishes books and databases; conducts seminars; and staffs five libraries in New York, Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Atlanta, and San Francisco. FC Public Website The Foundation Center public web site at www.foundationcenter.org is an excellent source of information for grant seekers. It links to foundation web sites, 990-PF tax returns of private foundations, and government grant programs, as well as offering tutorials, webinars and videos on foundation research and grant writing. FC Cooperating Collections FC Cooperating Collections The Center is supported by a network of Cooperating Collections in libraries and other nonprofit agencies in all 50 states. Love Library Cooperating Collection at UNL Love Library at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a Cooperating Collection, serving the citizens of Nebraska and the region. The staff at the Reference Desk on 2nd floor can answer many questions about grants and foundations. Access is free but limited to the Love Library building. Links to Other Useful Resources General Guidestar www.guidestar.org Guidestar profiles nonprofits and foundations based on tax reports to the IRS. The website is free but requires registration. More complex analyses are fee-based. Publication 78: Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 198 http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=96136,00.html Publication 78 is the IRS official list of organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. They are often described by their IRS designation of 501(c) 3. Most grants go to nonprofits with 501(c) 3 status. National Center for Charitable Statistics http://nccs.urban.org The NCCS provides state and national statistics on nonprofits, along with data analysis tools and access to raw data. It is a searchable database of grants currently available from federal agencies and it is the required system for making federal grant applications.
