At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (DMLL) offers an unusually stimulating context for study and professional work. The curriculum presents a well-balanced set of courses in culture, civilization, literature, foreign language teaching, and philology. As one truly international, interconnected administrative unit, Modern Languages gives students the opportunity to take courses in an interdisciplinary environment.

DMLL offers courses in Chinese, German, Japanese, French, Spanish, Russian, and Czech. Whenever possible, the courses are conducted in the target language, and upper-level courses encourage interdisciplinary work and work in comparative literature and cultural study. Instruction in reading, writing, aural, and oral proficiency conveys an understanding of the life, literature, and culture of these speech communities. Lectures and films, colloquia and visiting scholars, as well as placement testing and work in the language laboratory, supplement students' classroom activities.

Lincoln, Nebraska's state capital and second largest city, is located in the eastern part of the state. Surrounded by fields, lakes, and parks, the "Star City" has received national awards as an "All-American City" and "Most Livable City" with something for everyone to see or do.
