Special Language Opportunities

The Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant Program, offered through the Institute of International Education (IIE), supports two languages we are excited to offer at UNL. Arabic has been offered at UNL since the Fall of 2009. This year, we will be adding Portuguese to our portfolio.

Arabic

Arabic

The goal of this course is to increase students’ knowledge of the Arabic language and culture through a communication-based (inductive) approach; in other words, although students will be expected to learn grammatical structures, the emphasis will be on functional use of the language, which is context-driven to a considerable extent.

Classes will be conducted primarily in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Students in this course will continue perfecting their knowledge of Arabic focusing on the four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students should expect text assignments as well as work with DVDs, audio and web sites. Exercises include writing, social interactions, role plays, and the interplay of language and culture.

Arabic courses were taught during the 2010-2011 Academic Year by Othmane Zakaria, an English teacher from Morocco. He arrived in the United States at the end of July and taught two Arabic classes. He hopes to serve as an ambassador for the language he loves and to help bridge the gap of misunderstanding that sometimes develops between different cultures.

Portuguese

Brazil_and_Portual

Spoken by over 250 million people in the world, Portuguese is a Romance Language that evolved from Latin. Portugal and Brazil often come to mind when one thinks of Portuguese, but many countries in Africa also speak the language. Adding Portuguese to your college education can open many opportunities for UNL students, from engineering to business and finance.

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic elements of Portuguese language and to develop communicative language skills in terms of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In this course students will develop their ability to communicate satisfactorily in Portuguese in everyday practical situations, develop cultural awareness regarding various Portuguese speaking communities and reflect on the social and cultural issues present in Brazilian culture today.

We are pleased that a Fulbright Scholar, Áurea Santos, will be joining the department to teach the Portuguese Language.
