The School of Music offers a variety of scholarships and tuition wavers on a competitive basis to undergraduate music majors. Awards are made on an annual basis and are renewable depending upon satisfactory scholarship and musical progress. Awards in the Band area are linked to participation in specific ensembles. The three most common types of Band Scholarship are: concert ensemble, marching band plus concert ensemble, and pep band.
To be eligible for a Band scholarship, each student must:
- Be registered as a full-time student at the university (12 credit hours, registration must be completed prior to the first day of classes).
- Audition for and participate in all appropriate ensembles according to the specific type of scholarship award.
- Maintain a 2.50 overall grade point average with a 3.00 grade point average in music course work.

The School of Music offers GTAs in various areas on a competitive basis to students in both the MM and DMA programs. Appointments are made on an annual basis and are renewable depending upon satisfactory scholarship and musical progress. Assistantships include a stipend, health benefits and tuition for up to 24 credits. Additional Fellowships and Financial Aid are available to qualified students through the UNL Office of Graduate Studies www.unl.edu/gradstudies Additional professional performance opportunities are available in Lincoln and Omaha.
The duties assigned to Band GTAs may include:
- Conducting, show planning, performance preparation and administrative duties with the Cornhusker Marching Band.
- Conducting and administrative duties with the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Campus Band.
- Conducting and administration of the Big Red Express Athletic Bands.
- Travel with concert and athletic ensembles.
- Directing and administration of Jazz Ensemble II.
- Website design and administration.
- Teaching assistance in MUED 411 (undergraduate Instrumental Conducting & Literature).
Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in music and admission to the Graduate College (approved application with transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and audition) with a declared major in music. Early application is advised. Applications submitted before March 1st will be given priority.
