Scholarships

The School of Music offers a variety of music scholarships and tuition waivers on a competitive basis to deserving undergraduate music majors. These awards are made on an annual basis and are renewable depending upon satisfactory academic performance and musical progress.

To be eligible for a music scholarship, each student must:

  • Be registered as a full-time music major at the university (12 credit hours, registration must be completed prior to the first day of classes).
  • Be registered in appropriate courses and ensembles consistent with a planned program of study as a music major.
  • Maintain a 2.50 overall grade point average with a 3.00 grade point average in music course work.

Graduate Assistantships

The School of Music offers graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs) in various areas on a competitive basis to students in both the Master of Music (MM) and Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree programs. Appointments are made on an annual basis and are renewable depending upon satisfactory academic and musical progress. Assistantships include a stipend, health benefits, and tuition for up to 24 graduate credits. Additional fellowships and financial aid are available to qualified students through the UNL Office of Graduate Studies www.unl.edu/gradstudies.  Additional professional performance opportunities are available in Lincoln and Omaha.

The duties assigned to Choral GTAs may include:

  • Conducting, show planning, performance preparation and administrative duties with the Big Red Singers.
  • Conducting and administrative duties with the university choirs as assigned.

Qualifications:  An undergraduate degree in music and admission to the Graduate College (approved application with transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and audition) with a declared major in music.  Early application is strongly advised.  Applications submitted before March 1st will be given priority.
