the School of Music
The
School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine & Performing
Arts of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a professional, comprehensive
arts institution devoted to the advancement of music arts and scholarship,
the preparation of the next generation of music professionals, and
service to the music professions/institutions in the region, state,
nation, and world. The Music Faculty consists of an outstanding
array of internationally acclaimed artists and scholars who care
deeply about their students (more than 350 students are enrolled
here currently) and who work in close collaboration to serve the
mission of the School of Music. Students in the UNL School of Music
may pursue a broad range of undergraduate and graduate degree options,
including the Bachelor of Music degree (professional music focus),
the Bachelor of Music Education degree (teacher preparation focus),
the Bachelor of Arts degree (liberal arts focus), the Master of
Music degree (professional music - advanced studies), the Doctor
of Musical Arts (the terminal degree in professional music), and
the Doctor of Philosophy (the terminal degree in music research).
All
degrees in the UNL School of Music are accredited fully by the National
Association of Schools of Music. In addition to this full range
of music-major options, the UNL School of Music provides outstanding
opportunities for the general university student to pursue their
love of music. These opportunities include academic courses in the
study of popular, jazz and rock musics, participation in any of
our ensembles (by audition), and participation in the world-famous
Cornhusker Marching Band. Graduates of the UNL School of Music find
success across the full range of professional and graduate-study
opportunities nationally and internationally.
The
facilities of the UNL School of Music include the Westbrook Music
Building, the Kimball Recital Hall, and the Mabel Lee Hall.
The Westbrook Music Building is home to the School of Music administrative
offices, classrooms, large rehearsal halls, Music Library, faculty
offices/studios, a 300-seat recital hall, music technology facilities,
and practice rooms. The Kimball Recital Hall is an acoustically
exquisite, 850-seat concert facility which provides balcony seating,
a fly space for opera productions, and a Reuter pipe organ.
The Mabel Lee Hall houses the School of Music Dance Program, including
rehearsal halls, faculty offices, staff offices, and resource facilities.

About the College
Founded
in 1993, the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at
the University of Nebraska–Lincoln includes programs in art,
art history, theatre, dance, music and music education. The College
is dedicated to helping students achieve their full potential in
the arts and offer a supportive learning environment with the highest
professional standards, small classes and hands-on practical experience.
The college, proud of its distinguished faculty of artists, performers
and educators, provides educational programs of study at the undergraduate
and graduate levels. The mission of the College includes fostering
creative activity and scholarly research in the arts and educating
our students to a high level of accomplishment as artists, scholars
and teachers.
Miss Christina Hixson, the sole trustee of the
Lied Foundation Trust, announced a gift of $18 million to the University
of Nebraska Foundation to support UNL’s College of Fine and
Performing Arts in January 2000. In appreciation for this and many
past gifts, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents voted to
name the College the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing
Arts, the first named college at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
The endowment, named the Christina M. Hixson-Lied Foundation Trust
Endowment for the College of Fine and Performing Arts, benefits
all areas of the college. Half of the fund’s income provides
support for programs in the college and the college’s affiliated
organizations, including the Lied Center for Performing Arts, Sheldon
Memorial Art Gallery, Mary Riepma Ross Film Theater, Lentz Center
for Asian Culture and the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. The remaining
funds are divided equally to support faculty and students. The fund
is administered by the Hixson-Lied Advisory Board.
The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing
Arts currently has more than 700 undergraduate majors.

About the
University
The
University of Nebraska–Lincoln, chartered by the Legislature
in 1869, is that part of the University of Nebraska system which
serves as both the land-grant and the comprehensive public University
for the State of Nebraska. Through its three primary missions of
teaching, research and service, UNL is the state’s primary

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been
recognized by the Legislature as the primary research and doctoral
degree granting institution in the state for fields outside the
health professions. UNL is one of a select group of research universities
that hold membership in the American Association of Universities
(AAU). Through its service and outreach efforts, the University
extends its educational responsibilities directly to the people
of Nebraska on a statewide basis. Many of UNL’s teaching,
research and service activities have an international dimension
in order to provide its students and the state a significant global
perspective.
UNL enrolls approximately 22,000 (FTE) students,
consisting of nearly 18,000 undergraduates and more than 4,000 graduate
and professional students.
