Welcome
to the School of Music in the Hixson-Lied
College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University
of Nebraska – Lincoln. I hope you find the information
you need about this superb institution in the web pages that
follow. The UNL School of Music is made up of an impressive
array of exceptional artists, scholars, teachers,
and students who find joy and great satisfaction in the serious study of music and dance.
We embrace what our UNL 2020 Vision Statement calls “an
uncompromising commitment to excellence.”
We expect that excellence of ourselves and we expect it of our
students.
Let me share a few "markers" of our achievements and successes here in the School. In
recent months, our ensembles have appeared on the regional or national
convention programs of the American Choral Directors Association,
the College Band Directors National Association, the Music Teachers
National Association, and MENC: The National Association for Music
Education. In March 2006, our dance students were featured on the
gala performance of the American College Dance Festival Association
concert at Wichita State University. In April 2006, our University
Chorale and the Saxophone Ensemble appeared in separate concerts
at the 2006 National Convention of MENC: The National Association
for Music Education in Salt Lake City, UT. In July 2006, the School of Music collaborated with
the Meadowlark Music Festival to present the Chamber Music Institute:
Lessons in Performance, Composition, and Entrepreneurship. In that same month, six
of our faculty presented music scholarship at the World Conference
of the International Society for Music Education in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. October 2007 saw the release of a new CD, entitled Minimal Effort, by UNL Jazz Ensemble 1. The CD enjoyed great reviews in Jazz Times and AllAboutJazz.com. In January 2007, the Chiara String Quartet, Lecturers and Artists-in-Residence in the UNL School of Music, presented an adventurous program of new music at Merkin Hall in New York City to an enthusiastic review by the New York Times (January 13, 2007). In March 2007, the University of Nebraska Brass Quintet performed across the Czech Republic at the invitation of music conservatories there. You can see that this is a dynamic place with extraordinary
people doing internationally significant work.
This School of
Music is served by exceptional facilities, including the Westbrook
Music Building, the Kimball Recital Hall, and the Lied
Center for the Performing Arts. All of these fine music resources
cluster on the southwest corner of UNL’s City Campus in beautiful,
downtown Lincoln. The hum of the city is delightfully in tune with
the energies of our School of Music.
At
whatever juncture you find yourself in your professional journey, I hope
you will consider UNL as a place where we might help you reach your
dreams.
Sincerely,
John W. Richmond, Ph.D.
Professor & Director of the School of Music
