Welcome to the School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. I hope you find the information you need about this superb institution in the web pages that follow. The UNL School of Music is made up of an impressive array of exceptional artists, scholars, teachers, and students who find joy and great satisfaction in the serious study of music and dance. We embrace what our UNL 2020 Vision Statement calls “an uncompromising commitment to excellence.” We expect that excellence of ourselves and of our students.
Let me share a few "markers" of our achievements and successes here in the School.
- In recent months, our faculty and students have appeared on the regional or national convention programs of the American Choral Directors Association, the College Music Society, the Music Teachers National Association, MENC: The National Association for Music Education and the American College Dance Festival Association.
- Our opera production of Jake Haggie's opera, Dead Man Walking, won First Place in Category 4 of the 2009 National Opera Association College Production Competition!
- The Harvard University Department of Music recently named the Chiara String Quartet, Research Assistant Professors and Artists-in-Residence in the UNL School of Music, as the Blodgett Artists-in-Residence for 2008-11. These one-week residencies each term by the Chiara Quartet will be in addition to their ongoing residency duties in the UNL School of Music.
- July 2008 saw eight UNL music professors and one doctoral student featured on the World Conference Program of the International Society for Music Education in Bologna, Italy.
- The Moran Woodwind Quintet and Dr. Stanley Kleppinger appeared at the National Conference of the College Music Society in Fall 2008.
You can see that this is a dynamic place with extraordinary people doing internationally significant work, and the work is starting to get noticed. We are pleased to acknowledge that the Fiske Guide to Getting Into the Right College, 3rd edition, lists the University of Nebraska-Lincoln among its 25 "Major Universities Strong in Music" (Naperville, IL: Sourcebooks, Inc., 2007), p. 153.
This School of Music is served by exceptional facilities, including the Westbrook Music Building, the Kimball Recital Hall, and the Lied Center for the Performing Arts. All of these fine music resources cluster on the southwest corner of UNL’s City Campus in beautiful, downtown Lincoln. The hum of the city is delightfully in tune with the energies of our School of Music.
At whatever juncture you find yourself in your professional journey, I hope you will consider UNL as a place where we might help you reach your dreams.
Sincerely,
John W. Richmond, Ph.D.
