Research Interests

As a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, Dr. Namavar’s work focuses on the development of novel concepts and technologies to maximize the lifetime of orthopaedic implants and minimize the possibility of wear and revision surgery. These innovations include the development of novel nanostructure materials and diagnostic techniques for both in vitro and in vivo applications.

Dr. Namavar’s research is conducted at the Nanotechnology Laboratory, which is housed at the Scott Technology Center on the Aksarben campus. His team uses an ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) system, which combines physical vapor deposition with concurrent ion beam bombardment in a high vacuum environment to create several specialized coatings that are being developed for orthopaedic implants, biomedical use, and novel materials for saving energy by reducing weight or to advance nuclear energy. Presently, the highlights of Dr. Namavar’s research include:

  • Application of nanotechnology in total joint arthroplasty:

    (i) Controlling and enhancing the bone growth
    (ii) Developing antibacterial surfaces for short and long term applications
    (iii) Reducing the failure of orthopaedic implants and revision surgery

  • Interaction of (adult) stem cells and organisms with micro and nanostructured engineered materials
  • Effect of electrical stimulation on growth and differentiation of (adult) stem cells on nano-engineered surfaces
  • Understanding how cell–Protein interacts with nano-structures
  • Developing smart coatings for orthopaedics and dental implants
  • Developing Biological Glue

Many of these works involve basic and fundamental research, such as studying the nature of nanostructured materials and determining the physical and chemical properties of their grain size, phases, porosity and composition.

Dr. Namavar has authored or co-authored well over 150 scientific papers in reviewed journals and has been granted several U.S. patents. He has been awarded over 50 grants and contracts from NSF, DOE, NIH, NASA and DOD.
