IRIS (Innovative Research Information System) is the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries electronic information system. It includes the electronic catalog, as well as databases and other resources. Newspapers in the catalog are accessible by title, keyword, subject heading and place of publication. The most straightforward search is by title. If the exact title is not known, but some words of the title are known, then a keyword search can be done. Finally, it is possible to search newspapers published in a particular state, county, or town. Choose "author" from the main menu and enter the following search string: United States [state] [county] [town] The higher elements of the hierarchy must be included. For example, to find newpapers published in Valentine, Neb., enter: "United States Nebraska Cherry Valentine". Using this method it is possible to search by state and county also. For example, to find a list of newspapers in Cherry County, the search string would be: "United States Nebraska Cherry".
If the location says NE St Hist Soc, then the newspaper is held at the Nebraska State Historical Society on 15th and R Street in Lincoln. They are open Tues. - Fri. 9:30-4:30, Sat. 8-5, Sun. 1:30-5. The majority of the newspapers are on microfilm, and are available via interlibrary loan. The catalog record shows a summary of holding years in the LIB HAS field, but many times there are gaps in the holdings. To find out whether the Society holds a specific date (e.g. June 2, 1942), you must check the inventory sheets, which are in the reading room at the Historical Society. They are in binders arranged alphabetically by place of publication. Staff on duty in the reading room are quite helpful. If you have any questions or need directions, feel free to ask them for help.
