About Level II Institutes

NeWP Level II Institute

Nebraska Writing Project Level II Institute is an invitational program for teachers who have already participated in at least one Institute sponsored by the NeWP. Each teacher has participated in an NeWP Summer Institute or Rural Institute and has been invited to participate because of local excellence in teaching and a desire to continue developing as a writer and teacher. The Level II program is modeled on other Level II programs at National Writing Project sites across the country and involves three main elements:

  • Further immersion in writing
  • Focused investigation of what happens with writing in classrooms
  • Fuller presentation of the best teaching practices, coupled with professional reading

All three of these elements build on the kinds of activities participants will have encountered in earlier institutes. The major difference for the Level II Institute is the emphasis on focused observation of participants' ongoing classes. The participants' weekly focused investigation of the classes they are teaching enables them to reflect on the writing going on in their classrooms, what that writing reveals about student development, about the context(s) teachers create for writing, and about ways to document success or intervene when necessary.
