About Summer Institutes

NeWP Lincoln Summer Institute

During the Nebraska Writing Project Summer Institute, teachers expand their knowledge of exemplary practices and research while focusing on improving their own writing skills. The Summer Institute is a supportive writing and teaching workshop with a predictable daily structure. Each day, every member of the Institute writes and shares their writing with others. Individual members of the Institute share their expertise, issues, and questions concerning writing and writing instruction. Nebraska teachers admitted to the Lincoln Summer Institute may qualify for a $1,000 stipend which helps offset the cost of 6 UNL graduate credits.

Summer activities occur in a regular pattern:

  • Ten minutes of silent freewriting
  • Sharing writing in small groups
  • An EQUIP activity during which Institute participants lead a writing activity or discussion
  • Professional Development period, which may include
    1. a second EQUIP activity
    2. special interest groups covering items from the professional development survey sent earlier in the spring and
    3. self-assessment activities emphasizing accomplishment during the Institute
  • Twice during the Institute, an oral reading takes place in order for each individual to share her/his work

Lincoln Institute Facilitators are: Dr. Robert Brooke, UNL; Dr. Shari Stenberg, UNL; Jeff Grinvalds, Westside High School, Omaha; Beverly Hoistad, Pyrtle Elementary, Lincoln.
