During the 2007-2008 academic year, the Faculty Leadership for Writing Initiative, a Program of Excellence, made significant progress. Shari Stenberg coordinates FLWI, and Jane Connealy serves as the project assistant. The program launched a substantive website with resources for both teachers and students (www.flwi.unl.edu) and formed a steering committee comprised of teachers and administrators from both UNL and surrounding K-12 schools. FLWI also facilitated three faculty Writing Inquiry Groups in TLTE, Natural Resources, and Statistics. The $36,000 ITLE grant the program received this year will allow the extension of these groups and formation of two new groups in English and Journalism next year.
In collaboration with the faculty leaders in Statistics, FLWI helped to develop a new TA course on pedagogy and writing in Statistics. FLWI has also proposed a partnership with the NeWP, and teachers from both projects will present their work at the 2008 Spring Gathering.
Currently, Stenberg and Connealy are working with faculty in Natural Resources, Statistics, and Agronomy and Horticulture to develop a K-16 project that joins writing, math and science in the schools; our new K-12 advisory committee will help develop this latest project.
