LINCOLN Summer Institute
June 8th to July 3rd, 2009

Open to teachers of all grade levels. This is NeWP's premiere programs, following the
National Writing Project Invitational Institute Model. Institute actitivities include:
- Immerse participants in their own writing;
- Invite participants to share their best teaching practices for writing;
- Engage participants in inquiry and research into aspects of writing.
INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES
- Freewrite exercises
- Visits with local experts in the teaching of writing
- Participant presentations on their best practices of teaching writing
- Professional development
- Practice using various computer technologies to support writing
- Writing workshops
- Institute anthology
Stipend: Nebraska teachers admitted to the Lincoln Summer Institute may qualify for a $700 stipend which helps offset the cost of 6 UNL graduate credits.

LITERATURE Summer Institute
June 8th to June 26th, 2009

Open to teachers of all grade levels. Past participation in a NeWP Summer or Rural Institute is preferred. This Institute explores the teaching of literature in a writing-rich environment. Institute activities include:
- Immersion in reading and in our own writing;
- Shared examination of the connections between literature and writing in our teaching;
- Collaborative research on reading/writing pedagogies; institutional and professional issues; new genres, media, technologies and resources for joining reading and writing.
INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES:
- Freewriting from literature
- Writing from, of, and about literature
- Participant-facilitated discussion of questions regarding the relationship between reading and writing
- Small group discussions of participants’ reading and writing
- Shared readings of selected literature and research on teaching literature through writing
- Visits with local experts in teaching writing through literature and vice versa
STIPEND: Nebraska teachers admitted to the Literature Summer Institute may qualify for a $300 stipend which helps offset the cost of 3 UNL graduate credits.

TECHNOLOGY Summer Institute
June 8th to June 26th, 2009

Open to teachers of all grade levels. Past participation in a NeWP Summer or Rural Institute is preferred. This Institute explores the teaching of writing as enhanced by technology. Institute activities include:
- Examining technology that supports our own and our students' writing;
- Sharing classroom projects that enhance writing through technology;
- Practice developing new classroom applications of software that can be used to support writing.
INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES:
- Guided exploration of software that supports writing, primarily on Macs
- Participant-facilitated discussion of questions regarding the relationship between writing and technology
- Small group discussions of participants' writing and classroom projects
- Shared readings of selected research on teaching writing through technology
- Presentations by local experts in teaching writing through technology
Facilitators: Dr. June Griffin, UNL; Cyndi Dwyer, Lincoln Southwest High School; Diana Weis, Cather Elementary, Omaha.
You will need to complete a two-page letter of application. Indicate the Institute to which you are applying and include the following information:
- What you are currently doing with writing in your classroom
- What you might have to share with other educators about teaching writing in your school and community.
- What you especially want to learn from other educators.
- Complete addresses for home and school, phone numbers, and email address.
Early admission applications must be received by November 13th, 2008 for notification by December 19th, 2008.
Open admission application deadline for the Lincoln and Technology Institutes has been extended to April 27th, 2009.
