Sustainable Communities

Co-Leaders:

About the Team ...

The classic definition of sustainable development is "to ensure that developement meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." This action team focuses on issues of sustainability and the connections between communities and food systems. The team is collaborating with the School at the Center project and has developed a Food Systems Inventory. The team has hosted sustainable meals to provoke discussion and illustrate the issues surrounding sustainability.

Plans for the Future

This action team will focus on one or two communities in Nebraska that are interested in working toward a model of sustainability. Team members will meet with community members to begin a dialogue to identify opportunities for change and outline a plan of action. The results of this work will provide a basis for a more formalized approach to working with other communities. The role of the University of Nebraska relative to community needs will be examined. The Sustainable Communities Action Team also will develop connections with those involved in related initiatives.
