In addition to NROTC program requirements, Midshipmen have the opportunity to participate in battalion related "extra-curricular" activities as well. Some of the more popular activities include:
- Sailing Team
- Semper Fi Society
- Naval Professional Development Society
- Drill Team and Color Guard
- Pistol & Rifle Team
- Endurance Team
Sailing Team
The UNL NROTC sailing team is comprised of Midshipmen and Officer Candidates who are willing to face the challenges and responsibilities involved. Students, over a four year period, are required to complete: two written tests, a successful rigging of a Lazer, 10 sailing hours, a practical ‘on the lake’ exam while sailing, and an assortment of knots before commissioning. To enhance our training, we occasionally receive instruction from members of local sailing clubs and marinas. Our lake of choice in the past few years has been Branched Oak Lake; the lake provides for plenty of maneuvering room and exercises.

Semper Fi Society
Semper Fi is an organization that is comprised mainly of students that are interested in becoming a Marine Corps Officer. MECEP students and Marine Option Midshipman are heavily encouraged to participate in this organization. However, membership is open to Navy Option Midshipman as well as any UNL student with an interest.
Semper Fi participates in a number of annual fundraising and social events. These events include a traditional bowling night and a traditional Mess Night. Lastly, student members are highly involved with social functions such as picnics, gatherings, and intramural sports.

Naval Professional Development Society
The purpose of the NPDS is to aid in the development of midshipmen as officers and gentlemen/women in the United States Naval services. The goals of the society are to foster a spirit of camaraderie between shipmates of the UNL NROTC Battalion and to imbue midshipmen with further knowledge of Naval history, customs traditions, and other professional knowledge.
One of the society's major events every year is the cake cutting ceremony for the birthday of the US Navy. If you are an active duty or retired sailor and would like to join us for this event, please contact one of our unit staff members.

Rifle and Pistol Team
Marksmanship is a very important military skill. To ensure that the Battalions Midshipman are exposed to dealing with weapons, all Midshipman are required to shoot periodically on the UNL Rifle Range. The top marksmen with both the rifle and pistol comprise the Battalions Rifle/Pistol Team. Students may be able to participate in numerous annual competitions including the Wisconsin Invite and the Colorado Invite. We also hold an annual inter-ROTC competition that the rifle team participates in.

Endurance Team
The University of Nebraska Endurance Team provides midshipmen with a great opportunity to learn the core values of the Navy: honor, courage, commitment; through the use of team-geared physical training. It meets on various mornings and afternoons and conducts rigorous evolutions of exercises modeled after the training regimens of the Navy and Marine Corps’ special warfare units. Midshipmen that participate are guaranteed to quickly learn to adapt to highly dynamic situations while also learning to keep in mind the safety of the team. With the determination learned, these team members are sure to develop a “can do” attitude for their future careers as officers in either the Navy or Marine Corps.
