Heritage Month Celebrations
During the last two years (2003-2004), OASIS at the Culture Center has served approximately 2,500 students through Movie Night and Coffee Night series. What we have completed is two fold.
First, we integrated a quality blend of education and entertainment into our events. We want our students to come away from a Coffee House or a Movie Night with increased sense of cultural and educational awareness.
Second, we complemented the themes of our Heritage Month Celebrations with an accompanying Coffee House and Movie Night (with RSO co-sponsorship when possible). For example, during the months of September and October OASIS at the Culture Center will co-sponsor three events with different Latino Student Organizations on campus. Our first event is the fourth annual "Fiesta on the Green" (Thursday, September 14, 2006) followed up by a Movie Night featuring Gatekeeper (Wednesday, October 18, 2006) and beginning the month of November with our annual "Day of the Dead" celebration (Wednesday, November 1, 2006).
National Hispanic Heritage Month
The Office of Academic Support and Intercultural Services (OASIS) in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month is hosting the fourth annual Fiesta On The Green, Thursday, September 14, 2006 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the University of Nebraska Student Union Plaza. The theme of this year's Mexican Independence celebration will focus on the coalescing cultures of historic and contemporary Mexico.
Our intention is to have students come away from National Hispanic Awareness Month with and increased understanding and awareness of the rich cultural diversity that makes up Hispanic culture.
American Indian Heritage Month
The audience will not only be instructed on the role and cultural importance of each of the activities but will also have the privilege of watching expressions of Omaha culture.
Black History Month
OASIS will host the fifth annual "A Taste Of Harlem" in February 2006. This event is the culminating event of Black History Month providing UNL community a chance to experience the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance has unique connection to UNL, Aaron Douglas, a 1992 graduate of UNL, was the leading visual artist of the Harlem Renaissance. " A Taste Of Harlem" will commemorate, educate and relive the 1920's and 1930's era of energetic and dynamic African American artistic discovery.
